In April 2019 we bought a new Hyundai Tucson with the 2.4 for my daughter as college grad gift . She drove it for 6 years and 92k and then i noticed it was burning oil. It would burn a 1 1/2 quart in 1000 miles . I check it a few time to verify the usage . I change the PCV and it did not help.

I change the oil in it religiously at 5k mile with 5/30 and hyundai filter bought at dealer . I have all the reciepts . So i call the dealer to make an appointment to check oil usage as it getting close to the end of the 100k warranty . They said i would need to pay for an oil change to do an oil consumption test. Irritated as i just changed the oil 1k miles ago. Oh well whatever so i pay for the oil change $100.

they changed the oil and sealed the cap and told us to come back in 1k miles . ok, no problem. so right at 1k miles i take it back and they verify it was consuming oil . They told me the next step was to do a cylinder clean process. made appointment, and they did it. Said come back in 1k miles

And at 1k miles i go back and they checked the oil again. They said its still consuming oil and they will ask Hyundai for a new engine. I ask if its a short or long block. The dealer said long block. ok even better .

So all through the process there was not much fuss or denial from the dealer. The only thing was they had to make sure we were the original owners , which we are . They did not even ask for oil change reciepts . it was just a hassle going back and forth , but i understand there is a process. They are not going to give you an engine because you say so. every time they gave me a loaner so it was less of a hassle. The new tech in the Hyundais is pretty cool .

So they called yesterday and said the engine was in. We took it in this morning . gave us a loaner .Said it will be done on Monday. All in all the process was pretty easy. My daughter loves her car, and would like to keep it for as long as she can . the only issue we have had, other than this oil burning ,has been a Hvac actuator . Easy to replace and cheap off of amazon.

Curious how its gonna run after we get it back on Monday

Best $100 run around I heard of. If the repairs were done properly should run like it did before without the oil consumption

I am just wondering now. If you use some different or possibly higher quality engine oil and change the oil and filter every 3000 miles, will the engine last 200,000 before starting heavy oil usage? I don't have a clue.

A Hyundai dealer tech will be well versed on swapping 2.4L's out....It will likely have the same exact performance as before.
yeah my service guy said he has a guy that specializes in doing the replacements . probably can beat flat rate .

I think it is bad engine design.

two questions:
1) All oil changes being done at 5k miles, what engine oil was used?
2) Is the replacement engine an updated design to prevent the oil burning issues and what is the recommended maintenance schedule? These questions would be for the Dealership.

always full synthetic oil like Kirkland or ST . i purposely bought the oem filter at the dealer to get the reciept. i have read where they would deny if they found a non oem filter . But in the end they did not even ask for reciepts

Don't know about the replacement engine, but logic would tell me that they had 6 years and a lot of money to at least improve the area that are affected . if we get another 100k miles out of it its gravy on top

Agreed. My theory is the DI system H/K used is flawed and washes away oil from the cylinder walls causing them to be scored which leads to oil burning. Most people don't check their oil and run them dry.

If injectors become clogged so less fuel is turned into find mist, then having a lot of not fine mist fuel that does not burn fast can be the source of how fuel washes oil from cylinder walls.

Moving forward I would go with something that is more likely to keep this new engine from ever burning oil. I would go with HPL PP or Amsoil SS. If you want to stick with off the shelf I would say VRP or M1 ESP 0W-30.

Hopefully, this story will ease the worries of the all the people who think DIY oil changes will result in a warranty denial.

kids Hyundai 2015 Optima never a drop used.
Was it the oil or did H/K address the problem by 2015?

i purposely bought the oem filter at the dealer
Years ago, when dear Mom was driving a CPO Saab 9-5 SE (4-cyl.), I was doing the oil and if it had to go in for warranty service, she'd say, "Put a Saab oil filter on it".
Her dad was, among other things, a hardware salesman.

This is just one example in a pool of millions.
...and yet I have never actually heard of someone being denied warranty when they kept an accurate log and receipts. I'm sure they exist, I've just never heard of one first hand. I have a friend who does MM cases and her opinion is the risk of doing DIY and keeping accurate records is minimal. She occasionally has to write a letter but has never actually seen a MM case involving an car dealership/car manufacturer go to trial and in her opinion it isn't David vs Goliath, you vs the vast resources of a multinational billion dollar company - it's a business decision on their part that the cost of defending will be more than the warranty cost.
