Having a local agent wasn't a concern to me since if you have a claim they are going to kick it up to someone in the regional office anyway.

This is very true these days. I had been with my local State Farm agent for 10 years and had a good relationship with them. Very friendly and helpful and I actually sold one of my cars to a woman who worked there. But.. Then I needed to file a claim and I got the most rediculous run-around through the claims office located 100 miles from here. The local agent has NO AUTHORITY OR POWER to do anything for you when you actually need the insurance. This experience was the reason we switch to the money saving GEICO.

Used to have Geico, but now have USAA. They have lower premiums and better service...I haven't found an insurance company yet that can touch USAAs rates...

I have used Geico for maybe 20 years and have never had any issues with customer service. I personally like doing almost everything over the website, but when I have had to call they were very prompt and efficient. For example, I was buying a motorcycle and for some reason my insurance paper didn't show up at the dealer and I had to call, waited about 15 minutes and they faxed me another insurance card. Rates have been amongst the lowest or very close any time I check. Someone I know is an insurance broker and I kept running into him around town and he was always asking me for the chance to quote on my various vehicles. When I told him I had Geico I could detect he wasn't very happy, but I faxed him over my various policies and have never heard back since. I even called a left a message that wasn't returned. I guess he couldn't beat the Geico rates.
