Afternoon all! When I bought some brake pads for my son on RockAuto I threw this filter in the cart (didn’t change shipping) so only cost like $1.86. I wanted to see what the cheapest oil filter on RockAuto for Mazda's would get you. I'm not impressed.....

Louvers seem pretty bad. Not completely shut, but not open by much….

These are for Mazda applications.

Update: Forgot to add, no anti-drainback valve. So , matches OEM which also does not have one.

I see that ugly brown potting and I think, Hecho en Mexico? It's an M&H "wix" made for FVP filter. In my observation many poorly done filters with that coo. No bueno.

They’re not closed. You’re right. Filter would probably work fine. I guess this is what you get for $1.86. Acceptable.

Cut that media off and look at the tube against a light …

The louvers aren't really choked down much, so of course they are going to show lots of light. Only way to accurately assess them is visually through the base plate center hole ... and the only way to do it before installing it on an engine.

The louvers in post 1 are opened well enough ... easy to see, even in the not so clear photo.

No, at least not the topic FVP filter. Anecdotes posted show Tech TL filters are made in two places, some in the US and some in China. The ones made in the US are truly Purolator made. HERE is a US made TL14610 I recently c&p. The M&H "Puro" made in China TLs have looked very decent too.

Fwiw, I really like that OP went the extra mile and removed the media to show the louvers. Adding light to them even better. It gives a much truer picture of the louver quality in my experience.

So, I went by the OP judgement of the louvers before media removed. I've found generally pointless to debate louver quality based strictly on down outlet pics. Those that think they are poor will think that, those that don't not going to change the former's minds. Media removed debate ends in my observation. Louvers media removed obviously fine here. Topic filter still sloppy/excess potting, but tolerable for use as a jobber type. Pleat spacing the same. Lacking info to the contrary sticking with Mexico coo. Topic better than many with same coo, eg, current Bosch Prem. and other Wix filter anecdotes posted. That said, not saying much.

@Sayjac I agree. I judged this filter pretty quickly and overall just didn't trust louvers. This excercise I ran through yesterday has changed my mind somewhat and I believe I was being too harsh. This filter would be perfectly serviceable for a 5K oil change, especially for $1.86.

That being said, I think I will still stick with my Premium Guards!
