Future of Quaker State?

QS is an ancillary brand vs Pennzoil or even “Shell” on everything else. (Shell encompasses Rotella brand too. But all “Shell” named brands.)
I don't think that's quite the right way to look at it. It's what is called a "value" brand, meaning that it's positioned to entice more price sens customers. This doesn't make it inferior, just aimed at a different customer segment.

Its like Dove soap vs Lever2000. Both are made by Unilever and both are fine soaps. But Dove is aimed at people willing to pay more because they perceive it to be better. But that doesn't necessarily mean it is better or costs more to produce.

GMC and Chevrolet, Tostitos and Santitos (tortilla chips), Budweiser and Natural Light; these are all examples of the phenomenon.

Pennzoil and Quaker State are the same way.

You two are saying the same thing.

It’s an ancillary brand. If you want to call it something else, you do you. But it’s literally Shell’s Walmart Brand. It’s not a mainline distributor brand. And they don’t have a full line of products under it. It just is what it is. Outside of Mobil, most majors have a second brand that fills some sort of niche, or is an ancillary brand. BP & castrol, Phillips 66 & Kendall, Chevron / Havoline / Texaco / CalTex, Shell / Pennzoil / Quaker state, Citgo & Mystik, etc. etc.

It’s not even a cost thing, or are “these things the same.” They’ll use the secondary brand for somethings they can’t do with the primary brand for any number of reasons. Whether it’s regional name brands, or just playing rebate games.
