yep, thats how its looking to me....
according to frams website, their Extra Guard filter(orange can of death), sizes ph8a, and ph3387A, both filter 95% @ 20 microns.
according to wix's website, their equivalent to the ph8a, the 51515 filters 95% @ 23 microns, and their ph3387a equivalent, the 51040 filters even worse at 95% @ 31 microns....

is it just me, or is that kinda.... sad?

Not surprised, I've been saying on here for a while now that Wix filters are overhyped pieces of junk.

Do you have proof of this statement? I use WIX because they are built well and seem to work well for me. BTW WIX has great customer service. Ask them a question and you get an answer right away. Not saying anything about FRAM, just my experiance with WIX

Come on, it's not cardboard, it's fiber or as the orange can engineers prefer it's "engineered media".

But I will say IMO there's more to a filter than just it's efficiency rating. Apparently even the makers of the orange can think so. The best filter they make is the Extended Guard with metal endcap design, like a Wix filter.

So, I think I'd take the Wix over the orange can, even if the Wix's stated efficiency is not quite as high. Just me.

I do give you some credit though, at least you didn't call the orange can, pizza box construction. Now that really would have been blasphemous.

Uh oh! look what you just started...... Interesting find.

The last thing I want on my car is a high efficiency filter the size of a walnut. I'll take the oil flow, thank you. In my app wix work better than anything Ive tried other than the OEM "Made in Japan" Denso that was on the car new. You cant buy these from toyota parts - whats up with that?!

I would have to disagree with the ecore, I have cut open many aswell and never had a failure. Some of them used up to 7500 on GM OLM trucks. Fram on the other hand is a hit and miss, I had a couple of imploded ones on my Jeep 2.5. On the other hand I had a couple that looked ok, then I had one on my truck, a microguard, that caused start rattle. Fram is a hit and missed, overpriced for what it is. Wix is also overpriced for what it is, I can only get wix's here for 7.50+ as NAPA golds, they are nice but not worth that. I rather spend 8 on a Fram Xtended guard if I ever really needed a heavy duty long drain filter.

No, you've repeated defended the cheapest constructed and poorest value for content filter to ever plague the Earth. The infamous orange can of doom..

Paying more for the absolute bottom feeding, cheapest construction that one can achieve in filter manufacturing and charging more for it that other offerings of SUPERIOR content and performance.

So cheap that they don't even use the same construction method throughout the entire line up as it would be totally inadequate for the purpose intended. They RUN toward more traditional methods when they feel it counts.

Obviously it's what they think numb consumers deserve. Cheap stuff at high prices.

well said.

I wouldn't believe a thing I read on the Fram website! All I need to see is the contruction of the filter to know it is garbage.

where you seeing this info on the wix sight for micron efficiency i dont see it.

Beta Ratio: 2/20=14/31 (here's the micron multipass rating)

Nominal Micron Rating: 21 (here's the nominal - which I find more indicative of typical performance out of the box).

FRAM Engine Protection ratings are based on multiplying an oil filter's dirt-trapping efficiency by its
dirt-holding capacity.

Hmmm....let's say it's efficiency was 90% and it's holding capacity was 10 gms.

That would be 9X, or close to the ExtendedGuard

So one that had only 60% efficiency and 10gms holding capacity would be 6X ..that would be the ToughGuard.

Now if they have a 95% efficiency ...that kinda means that they can only have 4gms of holding capacity. That's not likely.

They're not telling us the secret formula. A particle isn't a weight, it's a size. Holding capacity isn't a size, it's a weight.

I've got a 2000 Dodge Caravan w/144000 or approx. 90000miles on it.I typically change the oil every 5000km/3000miles. Is it beneficial to change the oil to a synthetic this late in life and get a filter to match so I can go 15000miles or whatever between oil changes or will stuff build up in that time that needs to be flushed? I just bought some Castrol GTX 10w30 and a Fram Extra guard filter. Should I take them back and re-evaluate.?
