Ford Expedition or Chevrolet Tahoe?

If I had to choice between those two. I'd pick the Tahoe. I like the old school solid rear axle vs. the independent rear suspension of the Expedition. Also the Tahoe LTZ has standard 4wd and the Expedition Limited is optional. The Tahoe has a standard limited slip rear end which is optional on the Expedition.

The Chevy 5.3L cranks out more HP and Torque then the Ford 5.4 and get alittle better MPG's too.

That's my 2cents.

2012 Tahoe - 320 HP, 335 lb-ft, 15/21
2012 Expedition - 310 HP, 365 lb-ft, 14/20

I think the Tahoe exterior looks better, but the Expedition's fold flat seating is a MAJOR plus over the Tahoe. Expedition is also the better tow rig (9200 lbs vs 8500 lbs)

Bravo. No one has any right to presume their "judgement" on you and your situation. Back when I had 3 kids in the house I remember needing the room you do, buy whatever you want!

IME the 5.3 in the Tahoe is a better gas mileage motor and Tahoes are a great design IMO. I think the expo's additional grunt down low is important if you're towing.

well said!

I had an Expedition 5.4 and my brother has the 6.0 Denali XL.
The Denali got better fuel economy by about 3mpg average and is much more comfortable and car like riding than the Expy.

The Expy is like brutus not really as refined but god the low end grunt in 4 low is incredible, it could pull that Denali around the block all day.
For towing the Expy would be my first choice for comfortable driving the GMC.
Quality on both is very good, you cant go wrong with either IMO.

I can't compare vehicles since I have little experience with either, but I will say that I prefer the Chevy's 5.3L engine to the Ford's 5.4L engine. The Chevy's powerplant is simple, compact, and very smooth.

My friends '08 Expedition EL (6-speed 6R80 auto) was averaging 18.xx MPG in mixed driving. I was impressed for such a massive land yacht, the 6-speed made a big difference in real world MPG and performance in those trucks. I like the '08+ 5.4 3Vs (post spark plug revision) more than the 5.3, it's a real truck engine with low end grunt and NVH is excellent.

His family is now in Taurus X to avoid those $120 fill ups though.

neither, both are very expensive and gas guzzlers. go for a minivan instead. it is a MUCH better value.

If you HAVE to go with one of those two, go Ford, even though its powertrain is a generation behind the pickups I guess, anything is better then Government subsidized product.

I would be very impressed by that as well. My FIL's 2008 F150 with the 5.4 has never gotten over 15.x mileage since he got it. He's had it back to the dealer and it checks out great.

Bottom line is at 18 mpg that is AMAZING mileage!

Most gasoline V6's in the market give 20-25MPG combined in the city & hwy driving. Now a behemoth an EL would be <14MPG, anything above that is worth disbelieving.

I averaged 19.5MPG running premium on the last trip from Colorado over the Memorial Day holiday (not heavily loaded--just the family and luggage/camping junk). From Amarillo to Houston (625 miles\32 gallons = 19.53); all speeds were
This was the first time that I ever ran premium (93 octane) and was impressed. I wish now I would have ran at <70 and would have paid more attention to my driving--it would have been awesome to break 20MPG.

If you can drive on a highway for a extended period of time that driving at 60MPH would not be hazard for others 22-24MPG would be obtainable. I would have to agree once you start driving above 65MPH gas mileage starts to drop and after 75MPG it drops like a rock. But something just is not right if you can not obtain greater than 15MPG on a F150 I can get that with exclusive in city driving.

Back to the original topic get the Expy, I have owned a 08 Tahoe, it was a nice SUV and better than the previous generation but the 5.3 engine is hardly a new engine by any means. The Expedition provides greater storage space comparable gas mileage and greater payload. The only area where the Tahoe is superior is the AC seems to cool the SUV a little better.

He's had this truck into the dealer twice to get it checked out. It runs great, it's just a bit thirsty.

I do know from experience that a Tahoe is a bad tow vehicle for anything of any size. But i just love the overall truck, it's a real sweetheart to live with.

Believe it or not there are people that have lifestyle's that make owning a mini-van impracticable. Mini-vans could tow and haul the payload for my trips. But a mini-van would not handle that pay load and towing two weekends a month very well. Add I am pretty sure my children appreciate not having to share their seats with luggage and camping supplies. Also I would need to place articles on the top of mini-vans that in a pickup I can place in the bed or in a SUV in the third row, I doubt that the mini-van would have any fuel economy advantages adding luggage to the top of vans tends to destroy fuel economy.

Yeah I had a 08 Tahoe, I liked it my children liked it, even my wife liked it. But there are reasons why I went to a F150. Overall it is a nice SUV and it does everything well, I would buy the EXPY if it was my money. But if I could only buy a Tahoe I would hardly consider this the end of the world either.

That is awesome mileage! Mine gets 18.5 100% highway. I don't even bother tracking mixed.

What about the Honda Pilot ?

Really? Since when have we considered 60mph to be dangerously slow? Drivers these days are unbelievable, they think that everybody has to go 75mph!

I think the same thing every time I see a large SUV hauling one person to work, with a receiver in the back that's obviously never been used.
The reality is that almost nobody actually needs one of these vehicles, and it is fortunate that most people have come to understand that gas will never again be cheap.

It is called vehicle "choice."

Yugo's no longer will suffice as a vehicle for a family and the dogs.

That being said, my son has a Tahoe and I drove it and it is one tough vehicle. Drove it in the canyons of Az.

Likewise, I rode in his friend's Expedition and it rattled from every corner.
