Hey all,

I bought a 2009 Escape 4x4 with the 4 cylinder engine back in december. The engine is the new 2,5 liters duratech DOHC that is also used in other Ford and Mazda products.
I ran for 6000km on the factory fill oil.

I went to the dealer for the first oil change, and asked for syntetic oil because I consider my driving conditions to be between normal and extreme. Winter is rough here (-20 celcius and loads of snow), plus in the summer it can get fairly hot and I plan to use the truck to go fishing and all and want the best possible oil.

When I asked the dealer what oil he would be using, he said that bardahl syntec is what he had on hand.
The same night it was cold : -10 and In the morning I noticed when driving for the first minute or so what I consider to be loud lifter noise. Since that oil change, the noise is there when the weather nears freezing point. On a hotter day, the noise is quieter and doesent last as long.
Now its been 5000km and before going to the dealer so they can diagnose the noise, I plan on switching to M1 5w20 and Motorcraft filter to see if changing brand help.

Is that and OK choice for my engine ? If anybody have something else to suggest, go ahead!

Thanks !

It's possible that the dealer put in an oil that is too thick.

What weight did they use? What weight is specified for your engine?

M1 is good oil, and I would think that 5W-20 would work well where you are at.

to BITOG!

As someone who lives up here in the same extreme weather, I would recommend any 5w20 synthetic in the winter and you could go with any Dino 5w30 in the summer. I think this would be the best choice and cost effective way to maintain your vehicle without sacrificing performance and protection.

Hmm i wonder how good this oil is...

thanks for the input, will try m1 and report back.

As for my dealer oil change, the invoice says 5w20.

Could not see the container as dealer used oil coming from a gun hung on the ceiling... did not like that concept at all. And when I asked what standard oil they used, they said regular dino 5w20. Then I guessed they did no use the motorcraft blend recommended in the manual.

thanks!

M1 5w-20 works great in my mothers 09 escape 2.5L. She also had good results with motomaster formula1 full syn 5w-20, even in -40 winter temps. We will be running mobil 1 0w-20 in her escape and my 09 fusion 2.3L in the winter months (hits Canada june or july), their extreme cold numbers are the best I have found.
The sound difference between M1 and the motomaster were negligible in her escape. The 2.5 is much louder than either of my 2.3's and we have just gotten used to it as all of the 2.5's we have encountered sound alike (I test drove 5 after mom bought hers to make sure it was normal...it was!). What I have found with my 2.3L is that GTX has been by far the quietest oil as of yet...but is the only dino I have run (PYB is for the next OCI).
If you find an oil that makes the 2.5 REALLY quiet please tell me, i will try it too.

p.s.
The best filter I have found for the 2.5 and 2.3 are the NAPA gold's (same filter), next best is the OEM.

Thanks for the info all.

tuckman: do you know if¸all the oil will drain out on the escape when only removing the filter? I might wnat to replace that plastic filter housing cap and wondered that. thanks.

I think your plan to use M1 5W 30 oil and a Motorcraft oil filter is a very good choice, I would not take others advice to switch between Synthetic and Dino, how much did you pay for a new vehicle? for this reason use a good filter and oil at all times and be consistent.

I have never actually tried pulling the drain plug with a full pan. I am guessing that it will not drain the whole pan, maybe 1/2 qt.
Is your cap leaking? If it is your warranty will cover it for free. One cracked on my 06 fusion and I took it to the dealership and they replaced it, no questions asked.

This vehicle is still under warranty and is spec'd to run 5w-20. I do not encourage voiding a warranty.
