I started using Red Line engine oil because their synthetic transmission oil worked so great...

I had a 1975 VW Scirocco. In the winter, first thing in the morning, both reverse and first gear were difficult to find.

In a local import parts store and saw the Red Line MTL on the shelf, saw the literature, bought two quarts and changed the trans oil in the Scirocco.

Now, I must admit that in my life I have been suckered by spiffy marketing literature promising the sun the moon and the stars.

The MTL really delivered in that VW. Gears were where they should have been and it shifted much more smoothly.

After the very positive result with the Red Line gear oil, I was curious about their engine oils. I read more of their literature (white papers) and decided to give it a try.

If I had a car with a warranty, depending on the warranty requirements, it might not make sense to run Red Line.

Many are quick to complain about the cost of Red Line. Being cheap myself, I see it the other way around. I figure at $7/quart the stuff saves me money. I estimate about a 5% improvement in gas mileage. My savings on gas more than make up for the high cost of the oil.

I've got 380k on a Civic with RL. Head's never been off and with a boroscope the cylinders look like new. I check the valves every 30k and almost never have to adjust them. RL is expensive but at 21 years and still going, it is working great. The camshaft was replaced because of one bad lobe, along with the rocker and new valve seals at 250k miles. The engine runs like new and I'm going to keep using RL.

Redline is awesome. Now I live here in Jakarta, Indonesia. When I was in Vegas, a quart of 10w30 was $8 and Mobil1 was about $5. This was back in 2001, don't know how much now. As you know, the temp in Vegas goes up to 110 in the summer, hot, dusty and dry.

Now, as I mentioned, I live in a third world country and it's easier to get Redline here than when I was living in Vegas. Of the whole Vegas, only one mom and pop store carries Redline. So ironic, it's an American product, just like CRC Chemicals, Permatex and Cyclo, but it's easier to find these products here in a third world country than the country where the products were manufactured. What gives? When I was in Vegas, I couldn't go to my local Pepboys,Napa,or Autozone to get industrial strenght CRC Chemicals, Professional Permatex or Cyclo. Can anybody tell me why?

But here they have two types of Mobil1. One is rebottled in Singapore and the other one is straight from the U.S. A quart of Redline is $11 bucks and U.S Mobil1 is $12 and the Singapore rebottled Mobil1 is $10. I bet none of you knew that there is such a thing as Singapore rebottled Mobil1(it states in the bottle rebottled in Singapore). So is the Shell Helix Ultra, rebottled in Singapore. The bottle looks the same though.

But there are like 100x more choices here in Jakarta, Indonesia, I think my post was erased for some dumb reason. There are Igol, BP, Fina, Total, Elf(yes, eventhough the company is TOTALELFFINA, they each have their own line),Motul is like a dime a dozen here, Shell, Esso, ADNOC(from Kuwait, bet you never heard it), Agip, Honda Mugen Racing Oil(expensive!), TRD Racing Oil, Aral, BMW, LubroMoly, Fuchs, Sikolene, some japanese brands that I've never heard of, some obscure german company, some obscure Italian company in a really nice bottle for $12 a liter, not to mention other el cheapo oil like penzzoil,valvoline,havoline,caltex,conoco,castrol,etc....

No problem finding CRC or Permatex products here in the Philadelphia area.

Here we go again ...

Then how come there isn't any cyclo in phili? I can get permatex, cyclo, and CRC under one roof! How come in Vegas only one! mom and pop store has redline? and the shop only has limited variety,I don't remember them having the MTL, MT-90, Racing ATF, D4 ATF? How come I can find those plus RL gear oil 75w90 without special order, explain that!

Who knows. All I know is any auto-related product that I care to use can either be sourced locally or on the Internet.

I emailed RL to see if they would be willing to respond to BITOG questions on it. I mentioned how BITOG was featured in Hot Rod magazine and how we have many great professionals on the board that know a lot about oil. Here was Dave's response.

quote:

Thank you for contacting Red Line Oil, I am familiar with the site.
If you have an oil analysis result from one of our products, you can
email it to me and I will look at it and send you my reply. Feel free
to forward any questions that might arise and I will do my best to
answer or find an answer to them.

Man, I almost forgot all about this thread!

I'm on the same boat as most people here. Seems like it's great stuff but man the price!

Maybe if we did some sort of group buy out thing and buy enough Redline, we can get some sort of bulk discount for those who chime in? Everybody who chimes in and say gets 5 qts of oil and there choice of filter. Just an idea,,,,AR

I'd participate in a Redline group buy.

I'd also be willing to be a distribution point for Colorado.

I emailed Redline some months ago asking who, what where etc... about selling Redline. They said you need to have a store running in order to sell there products. Bummed me out when they said that but rules are rules are I guess? I would love to sell RL and I know some friends of mine who use it in there cars exclusively,,,AR

I am an authorized RedLine dealer in California. Manufacturers have very strict rules regarding things like distributorship and advertised price restrictions, and still have annual price increases...this is why RedLine isn't very cheap anymore, and why major retailers have dropped much of the lubricant product (big chains in the West like Pep Boy still stock Water Wetter and SI-1).

Current retail price puts RedLine at or around 9.50-$12.00/qt USD depending on the product...the days of buying it at $7/qt are gone, and those who still advertise it as such are using old stocks and/or add shipping on top of the price, making a "good deal" just so-so after shipping.

edit-- even as a distributor/dealer you really don't get a "good deal" on oil...there is very little profit margin, and the oil is still on the expensive side. We carry it more as a service to our customers who request the oil, though I usually end up stocking 20-30 mixed cases as it is insanely popular here in San Diego. If you are thinking you'll be buying RL at $3-$6/qt its just not going to be the case (no pun intended).

Email privately regarding a BITOG group buy of RedLine at the business email [email protected] My minimum orders of RL typically consist of 12 mixed cases of product, so lets get rolling on this if we are serious.
