I live in NJ, USDA zone 6b I believe. We grow a ton of food plants in our yard, as well as flowers, decent grass, etc.
I do have a strip between a white painted fence and some hardscaping, maybe 1-2 feet. Some gets strong direct pm sum, some is fairly well shaded. I mention the white painted fence because I'm looking for something that stays low, but is more interesting than just grass or weeds that I keep mowed/weedwacked. I'd rather not have to use that since it risks damage to the white paint.
I've done sweet potato vines sometimes, which have nice leaves and flowers, but I'd rather not have vines, just something that lays and stays low and has some flowers. Violets come to mind, as do tiny panzies, which we had growing in a patch in our yard at one time and looked kind of nice. But again, I'd rather not have vines going up the fence or out over the hardscaping.
So, any recommendations on something good for that climate that lays reasonably low and doesn't go too far? I recall my parents had vinca on the east side of the house at one point, many it spread ok but didn't get too high, and had nice purple flowers. At least that's what I thought it was.
I'd love flowers from spring to fall, and I'd like it to be consistent in height and look without being too aggressive going elsewhere. Say 6" high max. Minimal management of the area is key. Perennials of course, please.
No foot traffic or trampling to speak of.
