'05 Accord 2.4l with 165,000 miles

Since new, I've been using M1 0w-20 with OCI at 5k. Never consumed any oil... 4.5 qt out and 4.5 qt in

Threw in TGMO about 1,000 miles ago. All highway runs at 65/70 since the change

Checked oil yesterday and between strong sunshine and clean oil, I have to admit it was difficult for me to determine the level but I THINK I may be down close to a qt.

Will confirm but let's assume that's correct - that I am down a qt

Could a change in oil brand cause some form of consumption?

If so, any idea as to why this might occur?

Is this a cause for concern? Get myself ready to change PCV or any other preemptive measures?

The 06 Odyssey (63k on M1 0W-20 since new) absolutely loves TGMO, so I expected to notice a difference but I didn't expect this

Again, I could be wrong about the consumption and will confirm but I'm fairly certain I'm correct and it's low

A few more comments:

*. Same Wix filter as per prior OCIs. This time, however, I partially filled the filter prior to installation
* 2nd dose of MoS2... Only 1/2 can this time
*. Reason for switch from M1 to TGMO: Lighter at start-up with higher VI

Thanks for any input

I've always let the oil drain until it drips... Drips... Drips.. Into the pan. If I understand your question, I didn't allow for a longer drain than usual

One more item that just occurred to me:

Several hundred or 1,000 miles prior to OC, I ran a bottle of Regane in the tank. But I've been using TC-W3 religiously for a long time now. The Regane had been sitting around so I figured I'd just use it as I needed the empty bottle anyway

he means at your checking point.did you allow the oil enough time before you checked the level.

Ive run TGMO before and it did use a bit..but not much. 1 quart in a 1000 miles seems like alot..but id drive it another 1000 and see how it is before jumping to other conclusions.

It is my understanding that when someone changes brands of oil after using the same brand for a long time it is normal to (possibly) have some consumption. It supposedly has to do with different additive chemistry. There is a good possibility that your oil usage with TGMO will stabilize after a few oil changes.

Having said that, there is also a possibility that it will continue to use oil running TGMO.

I don't think I would go with a thinner oil in a 165K motor.
Why not just stick with Mobil 1...your engine will most likely outlast the rest of the car using it.

I agree and would likely be using a high mileage product in your application.

X3

Would love to hear the scientific reason behind this but it seems to be common that when changing brands it takes an OCI or two to get back to normal consumption.

They do in my engine, it loves TGMO. Same engine as the OP. If it indeed is consuming a quart every 1000 miles then I think something else is going on. Switching oil brands shouldn't cause that much consumption.

Well that was enlightening.

I know it's just a matter of time before a HM oil will/could be needed but I don't think I'm there yet...? Maybe

I have to check it again... Problem is, my driveway is steep/not level so I can only check when out and about.

Direct sunlight combined with nearly transparent oil makes it hard for me to see so another look-see, with a younger pair of eyes, is in order

As was mentioned by another poster, I've seen where a change in brand could cause "consumption"... Is it a different cleansing effect via the additives? Could it be this? That? Would just love to know the "science" behind this if it is, in fact, an actual thing

The switch from M1 was for a couple of reasons...

1. I like the light-as-possible, thick-as-required school of thought
2. The battery in this car is a known weakling... Marginal at best. Figured a lighter oil might help ease the effort to some degree
3. The recent highway miles is not common for this car. More city/short hops are the norm. I figured that the highest VI (higher than M1 anyway) might help offset some of the issues such driving could cause

Aside from that, M1 has been very good to this car

Quick Update: Added 20 oz of TGMO to bring it up to the full mark.

Several hundred miles and so far, so good

Curious the way a new brand of oil can cause sonsumption

I didn't have this issue when I switched to TGMO, but when I went from Motorcraft 5W20 to Pennzoil Platinum, I lost a quart in the first 2K miles or so--then consumption went back to normal levels (roughly .5 qt over 10K miles). I used that oil for about 30K afterwards. I never actually believe it until it happened to me. I have no idea of the mechanism by which it happens, but that's my experience.

As far as running an oil "this light" in an older engine, I'm at 160K myself and have zero plans to go to a heavier oil or HM oil anytime soon... It runs perfectly on the TGMO.

Since you can't read the dipstick now, I suspect you never got enough oil in it when you changed it. TGMO is an excellent choice for your Honda. I'm using up my stash of SM in my daughter's VCM because of it's wonderful moly content. I UOA her oil at every change because of the class action lawsuit, so I run the MM all the way to zero which is usually 8000 miles. In your four cylinder, I would suspect you could run it 50% longer especially with mostly highway miles. You will do well with this oil.

As another reference point, my wife's six cylinder Sienna runs TGMO 0W-20 for the recommended OCI of 10,000 miles with no oil monitor and does just fine. It is admittedly a low stress motor.
