Absolutely nothing wrong with Edge 5W30, it produces some very impressive UOA reports too. I'm currently using it and have found it to be the best of any of the 30 grade synthetic oils I've used, including what some call "real synthetic oil". Don't worry much about the base stock, Edge contains PAO also, and it is the end result and how the oil protects your engine that really matters. Several of the Group III Synthetic Oils do quite well. JMO

From Edge FAQ section:

Does Castrol Edge contain Polyalphaolefins (a.k.a PAO)?
Castrol Edge is made from a proprietary combination of base oils, which includes PAO.

Thank you both for your advice. Right now I have to eliminate either Amsoil or Castrol based on the fact that the Nissan OCI are set at under 4K miles.

The question I ask myself is- Is it worth throwing in there Amsoil OR Edge based on the OCI I'm going to be doing.

I weighed a similar decision, RedLine vs something cheaper that I can get easily. Since Nissan insists on 3750/3 months, I figured even the "worst" synthetic I could find would be good enough.

SynPower or Ultra or Castrol Edge are not bad synthetics by any stretch, not as good as Redline but since Ill be draining it out looooong before its no longer effective, I went with SynPower because of the Advance Auto sale. You can choose Edge for similar reasoning.

I think the biggest thing is to make sure you document all of this, and stick with 5w-30 (assuming you take a pic of the bottles, or the grade is on your receipt, Nissan might balk if you show them a stash of Mobil1 0w-40 which we all know is an excellent oil, but since it doesnt say 5w-30 on it Nissan might start playing the denial game)

Amsoil OE is a perfect fit for 4K. I wouldn't go much beyond 4K on Edge anyway.

I'll do some more digin around on this site regarding Amsoil OE and XL fluids before I make the jump. I have a long ways to go before the change comes up. I haven't taken delivery of the car yet.

I'm gonna bump this thread back up for now. I think that I would "sleep better" if I knew the car was getting 100% synthetic fluids from the start. I know it will be a very long time before I purchase another brand new car.

Pablo mentioned to me one of the 100% Amsoil synthetic fluids above, but it doesn't meet the nissan standards.

Are there any other alternatives that are also 100&% synthetic?

3750 miles is not neccessary.
That is the severe service schedule.
7500 miles is the normal OC interval.

Any of the syns will do 5k or 6k without any probs, and possibly beyond ,but a UOA will really tell you how far you can go.

Exactly. All of my Nissan manuals say that "severe service" is repeated short trips in cold weather, driving in dusty conditions,extensive idling, and towing a trailer. Otherwise, 7500 miles on regular dino is recommended.

That's exactly why I keep suggesting Amsoil OE, and Amsoil XL if he wants the extra cleaners. No point going to Amsoil AS or SSO series.

After the factory fill gets removed, I'll try the XL or OE and do a UAO on each to see which one the motor likes more.

Slightly off-topic here- Have you guys heard of Nissan motors wearing quicker than average? One of the thing's I read on here, along with a member stating Honda motors wear the opposite?

It`s actually the exact opposite. Nissan probably makes the most durable and longest lasting engines on the planet.

Amsoil may be perfect for 4K, but, what do you know about Edge that most of us do not? Castrol claims up to 15K with Edge and I am not sure you can find an ILSAC oil that meets more requirements than Edge. So, tell us more Pablo.

I have enough experience to say that “requirements” are always a compromise.

I will not say anything “bad” about other products. I do however get the pleasure of seeing many engines via fill holes and sometimes with valve covers off and every so often tear downs.

I think I'll start with the XL as my first fill, run that to 7K than see about a UOA.

Right now my second job is to figure out which filter to go with. I don't think the [censored] Nissan made in china unit feature cardboard end caps will suffice.

I won't speak to other Nissan engines, but the 2.5L has a now well known inglorious history. Hopefully yours will not follow that pattern.

Nissan make a durable engine. I worked at a Nissan dealership (parts) a few years ago. We had several regular customers with high mileage cars (150k, 230k, 290k miles) that were still running great. All it took was basic routine maintenance, regular oil changes, and an occasional tranny and cooling system flush.
Most of the horror stories from failed Nissan engines are due to extreme neglect, and lack of maintenance.

Just get 5 quarts of M1 EP and an M1 filter at Autozone when the promotion rolls around. One call does all. $35 and your done. No UOA needed on a new car with 4k changes.

The 2.5 is a fine engine.
I personally would not buy a 02 through 06 model due to some issues they had.
The 2 biggest were the intake butterfly screws coming loose ,and getting sucked into the intake ,and the cat coming apart ,and making its way into the engines and destroying them.

The other major issues was a defective batch of piston rings installed on some 06 models.

The engine design itself seems to be durable , and 07 and newer models had all of those bugs worked out.

Thank you FZ1 for backing up what i said in the first place, i put Mobil 1 5w30 EP in my brother's brand new 2010 altima coupe and little to no consumption, naturally i have to check because im ocd, but to get back to the point when i called the nissan dealership service department and asked what synthetic oil is covered under the powertrain warranty low and behold MOBIL 1. I went to AAP got 5 quarts of M1 5w30 EP and a M1 filter for 35 bucks and thats it end of story.
