In the interest of accuracy, for the 02-03 2.5L's, neither of those reasons is the reason for complete/total engine failures. It is a defective precat design, and a recall which did not repair the issue, perhaps if anything, only slightly delayed the inevitable. Neither of those had anything to do with owner maintenance, strictly Nissan deception leading to total engine failure. That's the real horror story for those owners.
Those 2 issues were recalled and corrected.
When I was working at the dealership the recall work seemed to correct the issues just fine. Do you have an experience otherwise?
Granted I would rather have one of the newer engines due to improvements.
I was speaking in general, most engine failures I saw were due to lack of maintenance.
