Do they exist? I was chatting with some co-workers casually at my new job while I was looking at a diagram of an oil filter. I was explaining why I prefer filters with a silicone ADBV versus a nitrile and the benefits of it.

This guy seemed like he had to put his two cents in so he said "you know what the difference between filters is? some have a drainback valve and others don't." serious as could be.

now I didn't say anything because perhaps he was right. Maybe he was offended that I was the new guy talking about filters somewhat scientifically. idk.

feedback?

Some engines have the valve built into the threaded stud for the filter. The Chrysler 2.2 for example.Never heard any cold morning valve train rattle from one of those.

okay.

that makes sense. I was trying to think of a bottom-mounted filter without one and couldn't think of why. both my vehicles are this way so I guess I'm biased in my thinking. I'll take a 'a-doy' stamp now.

Interesting ... first time I've heard that some engines have a check valve built into the filter's mounting stud.

The OEM filter for the Mazda Skyactiv engines currently lacks an ADBV due to its 'threads up" mounting configuration. ALL of the aftermarket cross referenced filters have one.

That leads me to a question. Is it bad to have one if it is not needed? Probably not, but I wanted to ask.

Having an ADBV will not hurt in anyway.

The AC and Fram TG filters for the Chevy 3.9l in the Impalas does not have an ADBV, probably because it is mounted vertically with the base up. With a sump of only 4 quarts, I think if an ADBV was holding oil in the block above the filter mount the oil pump may not have enough oil to pump upon starting.

Doubt there is so much oil located above the filter that it makes the sump level so low that the oil pump can't pump oil.
