2013 Caravan 3.6 "Upgraded" Oil Filter Bypass Valve Question

Hi guys, new guy here.
My wife and I just bought a 2013 Grand Caravan with the 3.6 V6, and my wife loves it. It needed an oil change, but when I went to change the oil, I had the wrong filter. I found out that it had an "upgraded" aluminum oil filter housing which required a different filter. We figured that out pretty quickly, and while I waited for my wife to bring me the new filter, I got to looking at the bypass valve.

The bottom line is that what I have will not work as a bypass valve is supposed to work. As I took the old filter and bypass out, the bypass is permanently open. Held there by gravity. If I flip it over, both the spring and the oil pressure would hold it permanently shut, allowing no bypass ever.

As I am trying to post this, I realize that I did not get good pictures. I'll try to get better ones tonight and update.

I am not familiar enough with this to even know what parts I need to order to fix it. If anyone could give me some idea of what I need, I would sure appreciate it. My wife is missing her van.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: I just realized I posted this in the wrong forum. Sorry about that. Should I delete and repost, or can this be moved?

Is that bypass valve part of the filter, or part of the engine where the filter fits into? Hard to tell what's going on there. Can it be removed from the filter for a better look?

ZeeOSix, I had asked on another forum as well as stopping by the local Napa last night. Between those two they had better pictures of what it was supposed to look like. The bypass valve is supposed to be a part of the oil filter cap. Once I saw those pics, I could see that the relief valve had broken in two places, and that was what was sitting in the top of the old filter. I have a new oil filter cap coming today, and that should fix it. At least as far as I can tell right now.

Here's a few better pics for reference. No idea what brand oil filter adapter it is, but it obviously isn't orange like the Dorman I see online. I marked in yellow on the cutaway where I believe mine broke. The spring is no longer captured, and the entire housing is broken off the cap.

Not good, but not nearly as bad as I thought it might be when I pulled the cap off and saw the what I posted in my first post.
