FDA finally bans triclosan in soap

It says they can't "market" Triclosan as an "antibacterial" ingredient.

I don't see where they are banning the sale of Triclosan soap.

It has been legitimately hard to find "normal" soap. Thankfully this should reduce or end the fad.

Under the Cetaphil brand there is a bar soap called "Antibacterial Bar." The active ingredient is triclosan. They call it a "synthetic" soap. Now, that should appeal to some of us! It was recommended to me by my dermatologist a number of years ago for my "backne" problem. It pretty much cured it and it's a very mild non-drying cleanser. But, I do agree that antibacterial became far too much of a buzzword in recent years and there are probably too many products incorporating it.

Can you believe being over 50 and still suffering from acne? A friend of mine once told me I should be glad that I still have "youthful hormones."

I think I'm allergic to triclosan. Toothpastes with it always leaves my mouth with this slime that ones without it don't. Glad that most name brand toothpastes don't seem to use it anymore. My skin doesn't seem to like it either.

My neighborhood is all on septic. I remember talking with some of the Moms awhile back who used this stuff to "protect" their kids from germs. Once I closed the loop about constantly titrating their septic tanks with triclosan, given the amount they were using, and that perhaps their kids immune systems were not as strong as they could be, their TILT light was enabled.

After all, there's a reason eating mud pies as a kid leads to a healthy immune system. I dont' remember any kids refusing a PB&J.....it's what we all ate for lunch.

Go figure.....

Living in an overly clean and safe bubble causes kids to grow up soft and unable to cope with the outside world, not only applies to their immune systems but their social systems as well.

Kids are supposed to play in the dirt and wrestle and deal with their own issues, we are descended from apes after all.

Yup, George Carlin had a whole standup about growing up in New York City and swimming in the Hudson river with hypodermic needles and dead bodies when he was a kid. My mom's doctor when she was little was the Medical Examiner for NYC. He said kids need to be exposed to germs, and this was the late 40s early 50s.

That margarine stuff is probably more toxic to bacteria than triclosan.

Sounds like this is a good idea. I've always bought the regular soap. Less chemicals the better.

There's a reason half the kids now days have allergies, asthma, etc, and are sick constantly. My one year old runs all over the place. Plays with dogs and cats. Eats everything I eat. She's healthy as a horse.

To me that is a sign of good parenting. Wish more parents around here raised their kids like you do.

Just look at the MSDS, and consider Colgate's statements at the start of putting it in toothpaste "there is no evidence of harm with this material in toothpastes"

I just try to use some common sense.

About time. That stuff was useless for really killing germs. All it did was cause the nasty bugs to evolve resistance to it faster.

Regular handwashing removes a lot of germs. This perfectionist mentality of ridding ourselves of all germs on our hands led to larger issues, as perfectionism often does.
