There is a medical study I think by HMS that indicates getting a small child (pre age 5) a puppy is good for developing immunity to all kinds of germs and reducing allergies later in life. This puppy will expose the child to germs he or she would otherwise not come in contact with and thereby boost the range of immunity in their system. Imagine that.

It may reduce, but let's not think that it'll fix everything.

I grew up with cats and dogs, and lived in the suburbs with a yard. I am allergic to cats, grass and ragweed, probably other things too.

I also spent plenty of time outdoors yet today I'll burn with ease--can't overcome freckles and red hair.

Exposure is good, I don't limit my kids from dirt and pollen; but I won't be surprised if they wind up like me.

AFAIK, the immune system is like a muscle or a mind, in this sense: if you expect it to work, you have to exercise it.
