Fortunately he was found and got home safely.

Eventually someone will be captured if bombing continues and has to bail out over the city they just bombed.

The same thoughts would apply if your son was autistic, had multiple sclerosis, etc. and people commented about costs allocation to research and manage it.

Lets face it, war is evil and will remain mankind's scourge forever.
War should always be a last resort. It's always bad, but sometimes less bad than the status quo. (I don't know enough about this war to comment one way or the other.)

My reaction to the statements "I can't imagine what the cost to extract this guy are." vs. "You'd be less worried about the cost if it were your son." missed my mark. You countered the "cost' statement by putting personal value on it "your son". The proverbial "it matters more if it's in my own back yard".

I'm not comparing the two activities, war and health research. It was an attempt to express my frustration with mankind's choices (evil vs. good). Remember, I'm an idealist. The person with the extremely challenged child would think, "if you were in my shoes, you would be distraught we are not spending those $$$$ on research if "it was your son".

Hope that makes more sense. Just expressing my frustration at the world these days. A few others above expressed comments in a similar vein.
I hear you. Remember the ice-bucket challenge a few years ago to raise money for ALS research?

There was some pushback from some pundits, perhaps from the rationalist community, saying that ALS is relatively rare, and that society would be better off as a whole if people donated to other causes instead.

A friend was diagnosed with ALS almost six years ago; I'm glad to donate to his fundraiser every year, and am glad to see public money spent on ALS research.

Of course the other stuff is important, but so is this!

I get what you're saying in your previous posts @doitmyself, but only include your above statement.

My Dad proudly served in the 8th Air Force, 96th Bomb Group based out of Snetterton Heath. He took part in missions that the history revisionists now consider war crimes. Total BS in his opinion and mine. Regardless, he always said war was, in his words, "a total waste".

I'm a Type A guy with a competitive and protective nature. I've been in one fight in my entire life and that was with my best friend over a hula hoop when we were 10 or 12 years old.

My point is that I am not a combative person who looks for trouble, but should my home be invaded and one of my family members assaulted, that will mean war to me. One of us is going to end up in the morgue. Sometimes you have to do it.

Scott

My Dad is in the middle.

Weird thing is, there are people telling us "they aren't even shooting at us" and that we have "Air Dominance and Superiority".
It is a bit of an exaggeration, in the sense that radar systems and missile launchers are all but gone. However, low flying aircraft are still vulnerable to sophisticated shoulder launched missiles (MANPAD). Very little time to evade deploy countermeasures at low altitude.

If flying low, they’re still within range of small arms fire, which could injure the crew or damage systems. Iran allegedly has a series of underground tunnels where they can move missile batteries by rail. They obviously won’t want to expose them more than they have to, but they still have quite a few antiaircraft assets.

Would have been a massive bargaining chip.

If they laid a finger him, they know we'd make sure they don't independently generate any power for a long time.

A lot more of this would come their way:

I do hope no Female US pilots are flying sorties over Iran. Not that they are not capable. But if they get shot down and captured the pressure to comply with Iranian demands for her potential release would be magnified.

Well understood by all females that volunteered for combat roles in military service. None of them were drafted to that role.

Women, especially American women, shouldn't be in combat, period.

I agree. BUT IF THE WOMEN SOMEHOW FULLY ACKNOWLEDGE THEY WILL ABSOLUTELY BE RAPED AND KILLED if captured, I guess it could be a thing................
Men can be raped and killed too. So gender won't save anyone from potential atrocities committed. I'm reminded of Mogadishu. Or more recently October 7th, 2023 in Israel, which was backed by Iran.

I know of several women who fly fighter jets, and could be in harms way in this conflict. They know full well what the consequences could be of landing in enemy territory.

I knew one SEAL very well who knew the people he was sworn to defend against were often pure evil. An example were the people they were trying to stop when he was killed by putting himself in harms way to try and protect another team member who had been hit. The 'people' they were attempting to stop (and ultimately did at the cost of Mike and Nate) were strapping bombs to mentally challenged persons, sending those people out into crowded areas, and then setting off the bombs remotely when they reached sufficiently crowded areas...

There is good and evil in this world. For evil to prevail, it requires good men and women doing nothing.

I for one am grateful we didn't sit around and wait for Iran to develop an ICBM that could reach the US homeland, because I believe they absolutely would use it if allowed to attain that capability.
