BVR kills seem to have a very low rate of success too, so that's another demerit for paying substantially more for stealth. Once you fire the first missile, the cat's out of the bag anyway, and if that missile doesn't result in a kill it's down to speed and agility to make it back home. The F-35 seems to lack both. I don't know what chance the F-35 has against for example a Eurofighter Typhoon or a JAS Gripen (or even a SU-35) once in visual range, but I don't think I'll like the odds.
