"Details remain limited, but reports indicate U.S. personnel reached the service member behind enemy lines in Iran and successfully extracted him, with all personnel now safely out of the country."

This is why the days of manned aircraft need to be numbered. I can't imagine what the cost to extract this guy are. Obviously glad he is alive and well. Ukraine has it right.

Let's' not forget the US Coast Guard, an often overlooked piece of our National Security puzzle. My understanding is active-duty are still being paid, but civilian employees have been working without pay.

The same thoughts would apply if your son was autistic, had multiple sclerosis, etc. and people commented about costs allocation to research and manage it.

How you consider the rescue and extraction of a US airman to treatment and research of diseases is a mystery to me.

This speaks to the operational readiness and competence of our forces as well as their willingness to venture into harms way when the mission requires this.
