Many might know that there has been some issue with Ford PTU's on Flexes /edges and the like with burned, sludgy lube causing leaks (blocked vent) and eventually PTU failure. Part of issue is small volume (500cc) and lube break down (Ford specs there sync gear oil)

Question is - what is the highest quality gear oil for extreme services like this?

it just needs changed. Thats the one that spec's filled for life?

do it every 30000-50000 miles and you should be fine with just about any syn gear oil
(it specs their gl-5 75w90?)

Synthetic 75W-140 is required for the PTU -- use whatever brand you desire.

Amsoil or Redline. That is basically a 1/2 quart of oil. I would change it every 30,000 miles.

thanks all - from the amount of failures I am reading about - esp. in hot climates - I was thinking about changing it every oil change - couldn't hurt...

Could install something like a diff cooler - although that would buy A LOT of quarts...

This is probably the highest quality synthetic 75W-140 GL5 gear oil, but I have never used it http://products.lelubricants.com/item/75w-140-2/synolec-gear-lubricant-9920/9920?bc=100|1294|1290&forward=1

You can buy it from Mag-Hytec.com by the quart. http://www.mag-hytec.com/oil-9920 SYNOLEC.htm

Just don't treat it as a "lifetime fill" and you'll be fine.

$28/quart? Wow!

I'm having difficulty, especially at that price, seeing what could possibly justify the expense for this application.

Take a look at the data sheets and compare -- Mobil 1 is $18.99 at the local Advance Auto.

I guess part of the question is once a gear lube hits or is close to its boiling point should I consider it toast? 30k seems like a long time to run if it is close to getting cooked.

Just how hot do you think the PTU is running?

1/2 quart - 6 inches above the exhaust - 70mph for several hours - how is that heat going to dissipate?

It'll obviously get rather hot, but there's no reason for inordinate concern -- just change every 20,000 miles (not every oil change!) with a good 75w-140 and you'll be fine.

MY Escape PTU made it over 90K miles then blew out. I changed it to Mobil one at around 60K and it was dark. I would change it every 30K with a good full synthetic. I am planning on running 3K on the factory fill and then putting in Amsoil severe gear.

With only have a quart to fill it, it won't cost too much to use a premium fluid and change it every 30K

I agree with the above. Sounds like a definite case for a premium gear oil like Royal Purple MaxGear, Redline, or Amsoil SVG in the correct weight. I too would be doing 30K changes( maximum )of the fluid.

As a follow up I went to change the PTU fluid yesterday and guess what the geniuses at Ford did?

They thought that the best way to ensure that fluids were changed as often necessary was to eliminate the drain plug.

Looks like a fluid extractor is in my future.
