Evaporative cooling in the drive thru.

Ran up to chick- fil-a for lunch .They have a couple of girls ( well my best guess as this is California ) outside. One takes your order and the next one takes your money.

They put up fans with water pumped to them to cool the area down. Seems very inefficient being outside but what do I know.

Guess they dont want the girls/people to sweat and have their makeup smear when it's 110F+ out.

We have that setup in Houston which is hilarious as it's 90% humidity. My guess is that is a business decision from drier climates.

If the relative humidity is below 40% it works very well. The evaporation drops the air temperature quite effectively - changing from water to gas uses a massive amount of energy - same process as AC.

Privately held - corporate is Atlanta. They clearly should know better. That sounds more like a shower.

Our first Az house only had a swamp cooler and the name is apt. As the humidity goes up in the summer monsoon season the cooling ability goes down and you just add moisture to the air in the house. Hated it. Chris, you don't have any window shakers in the bedrooms at least? Life changing.

In this situation the fan/spray works if the person is in path of the mist. If the water there is hard and they aren't treating it they won't mist for very long.

Good to know some companies do care about improving their employee's working condition.

The water wouldnt work here once it becomes too humid but the air circulation I bet helps.

First place I ever saw fans with misting nozzles was at the Steve Irving Zoo in Australia. It was HOT and they did help.

Chick Fil A has them at all locations now afaik. They even have them up here in Michigan.

Swamp coolers and cooling with water only works well in dry climates. In South Texas that would just make them even wetter along with being hot. We are already sweating like horses in the humidity. I have never seen them use the mist here, just the fans. But when you are hot, even hot air blowing from a fan is better than no air.

I was a religious volunteer in the Texas prison system for a couple of years. Back then, the Clemens unit had no a/c and we had afternoon service in their large indoor chapel. It was a miserable time inside a building, in the summer time, in South Texas with high 90’s in temp and humidity that could be cut with a knife. But, those massive fans gave a little relief and were better than nothing,
