Engine sounds different

Reminds me of an engineer I worked with. He designed a bracket for a test. Machine shop made it to his drawings. Techs couldn't install it because it interfered with a frame. Tech took it to his desk and asked him to come down to the airplane. Engineer refused, pulled out his drawings, and said it had to fit. Measured the bracket, it was perfect to the drawing. Still refused to go to the airplane and kept pointing to his drawing. I went down and guess what? It couldn't be installed because it interfered with a frame.
Some people have numb buttocks and deaf ears.

It was something out of the 90's as I recall.

Would have been a LT1 or LS1 depending on early or late 90’s. Both relatively quiet engines, obviously not DI.

Sewing machine clatter is interesting, possibly lifters but that should have resolved shortly after running if that were the case. Possible piston slap I suppose…

Anywho, sorry, rambling out loud again…

The LT1 in the 92-96 Corvette did often suffer from cold start piston slap. I had a 95 Trans Am and a 95 Formula with that engine and the Trans Am did have some piston slap but the Formula didn’t.

Some will say you are full of poop with your observations and they will say you are comparing old worn out oil to new oil. My thoughts? I think there are differences in oils that results in different acoustics. Does that make one better that the other? I'll leave that to smarter people than me.
There are definitely notable sound differences between oils in terms of how the engine sounds responds when you swing pretty far in formulation or viscosity.

When we first purchased our used Mazda 5 sport it had Mobil 1 in it. Engine was slightly noisy. I switched it to havoline and was quieter for a while. Lately I have been using Quaker state full sythetic high mileage since in 0-20 weight. It stays quiet the entire 5k oil change. It now has 168k on it and still runs so quiet that when you pull up to a stop light I check the tach to verify its running.

I love these discussions but nobody ever posts any data. We're all carrying noise and vibration analyzers in our pocket these days....computer power we only dreamed of in the 70s.

I have two of the same cars with the exact same engines and both sound different with the same oil. Of course one is a 21 with 57k and the other is a 24 with 25k. But, I did notice my 18 did sound more rackety the only time I used Mobil 1 Extended Performance in that car compared to Valvoline. You’ll get varied opinions on this matter.

While noise may be subjective, I’ve always noticed on several engines ran with Mobil One, that the engines ‘seemed’ a bit louder. However, since I’ve used the ESP 0w-30, I havent noticed it in the Mazdaratti like I did with other formulations.
