Oil for new 2006 Corolla

Your welcome.Fuchs GT1 0w-20 really good oil but expensive.You can do 10000kms easily.

Just went to a Toyota dealer in Australia to check the Toyota brand oils. On the shelf they had:

- 20W-50 Mineral
- 5W-40 Synthetic
- 10w30 Mineral

I looked at the 5W-40 and it was SL/A3. I got a shock when I looked at the 10w30 because it was SJ. I mentioned to the guy in the dealership that the manual specifies at least an SL oil for the Corolla.

I asked what they use in the workshop and he said a Castrol mineral oil in drums (I am guessing Castrol XT 10w30 or maybe GTX3 10W-40)

Now I am guessing the Toyota brand mineral oil is a good oil and will do the job but you wouldn't go to the auto store and buy SJ oil, would you ?

Too bad that the aussie lawmakers have not broken the monopoly that the dealers apparently have on servicing vehicles while under warranty. Seems like the dealers are getting by with putting in and selling less than correct stuff....

Just my opinion though. But the maverick American mentality hates being told you have to go to someone special to have your service done.......

The situation here is pretty much the same as in the US. You can get a car serviced by any licensed mechanic and still keep your new car warranty. However, most people use the dealer to avoid any potential hassles should a serious problem arise. Gives them one less way they can wriggle out of their warranty liabilities.

Second-hand warranties offered by factory dealers are a different matter. These tend to require servicing at the dealer you purchased the car from and are a scam IMHO

This is my third car and my first new one. I am debating in my head whether I should use a Toyota dealer or my machanic of 15 years to do the servicing. Haven't made a decision yet as I have 6 months or 10000 KM to think about it.

Have put 500 km on the new car looking for different retail oils that are readily available.

Have taken the advice of the forum members and will be going to a 30 weight synthetic at first logbook service: 5w30 (Castrol Edge) or 10w30 (Mobil 1). As expected, haven't seen a single 20 weight on the shelves. For me first logbook will be approx 6000 km (ie 6 months)

As far as I know, current factory fill is Toyota 10w30 SJ mineral. I am planning to change out the factory fill myself after the free 1000 km inspection and am not happy putting more SJ in there. Will probably be using Valvoline XLD Lo-Vis 10w30 which is SM/ILSAC GF-4 and very good value.

Valvoline should take me nicely until synthetic for the duration.

Unless the oil is way to thick like 40 wt in 20f . I have adjusted far too many over head cam engines in 50f temps using straight 30 oil and the oil is pumping to the head just about as fast as the engine starts turning. There is way more to cold start wear than just the oil .I can see at -20f using a petro oil takes way to long to reach the pump, but then a 0w20 syn probably be the better choice.
