Old car, thicker oil?

I have a 1995 model BMW 520I (European model) which in accordance to Castrol shall have: Castrol EDGE Sport 0W-40, Castrol EDGE 5w30 or Magnatec 5W-40 C3 viscosity oil.
Sins my old care have gone 192000 Km is there a good idea to use a thicker 5W-50 oil or should I stick with the thinner 0W-40?

In our 1995 325ic with an M50 TU engine, I'm running Castrol Syntec GC 0-30, and Elf Excellium Full Tech 0w30 will also work well.

Easier to find:

Mobil 1 0W-40
Redline 5w30 or 5W-40
Valvoline Synpower 5W-40
Castrol Syntec 5W-40
Amsoil Euro 5W-40
Mobil 1 High Mileage 10W-40
Valvoline >> SYNTHETIC
Maybe Eneos 0w50 or Castrol Syntec 5W-50 if you are in super hot weather

If you want to run non synthetic:

Castrol GTX 10W-40 , 20w50 or similar Pennzoil Havoline etc etc.

or Shell Rotella 15w40, Delo 400 15w40 etc
Shell Rotella Synthetic 5W-40

I also like using Auto RX for a clean and rinse , or Lubecontrol LC-20.

Read up on your car and see if any engine, cooling, and suspension maintenance issues deserve critical attention

Well, if you have excessive wear issues, you might want to be a bit thicker. If you have excessive oil passageway crud buildup, you might want to run a thinner oil.

What I'd do is start in the middle of the recommendations, and see if I had excess consumption. If not, I'd go one step thinner.

I wouldnt consider 120k miles on A BMW as high miles. Is it using oil between changes?

88 Saab, 0W-30. 96 Saab, 0W-30. 96 Volvo 850 turbo. Previously 0W-30, now 5W-40. 90 Dodge van 10w30.

Why would I want to run anything more viscous. Since I've been running synthetic for years, I know that internal wear is minimal.

Thank you for your replays. Sins I live in Norway (can be cold here you know) and change oil once a year I think I stick with the 0-40W oils.
I must also say that my old BMW are not so far using any oil between each oil shift (I don’t need to re-fill). I then don’t think wear is a problem yet.
