I just pull up next to a fuel delivery truck and fuel up for free while hurling down the road at 60 mph.

Like in "Mad Max" or "The Road Warrior"?

Sounds like there might be a market for mobile refueling stations.

Mind is racing at the possibilities of a boom hanging out the side of a tanker, aiming marks for the drivers....WOW

I am the Nightrider. I'm a fuel injected suicide machine. I am the rocker, I am the roller, I am the out-of-controller! I'm the Nightrider, baby!

The Toecutter - he knows who I am. I am the Nightrider! I am the chosen one. The mighty hand of vengeance, sent down to strike the unroadworthy! I'm hotter than a rollin' dice. Step right up, germ, and watch the kid lay down the rubber road, ride to freedom!

People worried about using their starters! They'd freak at the new cars (specially hybrids) that shut off at whenever you stop, then restart automatically when you press on the accelerator. I think there are more incidences of people stealing a running car than there are of fires, but I do remember reading that there have been some fires sparked by static electricity, and they warned of women who got back in the car while fueling generating static by sliding or out of the car.

I don't understand the comment about a cigarette not being hot enough to ignite gasoline. With gasoline having a flash point of -45F...... You have to have the proper vapor concentration to get ignition, so if a butt was dropped into a container of gas it would probably be too rich, but if the concentration were in the range of 1.4 - 7.6% and the cigarette had air drawn across it, I'd say it would ignite!

That would make you either an impostor for two reasons, or an ersatz hero!

It's a quote out of MM1, when a dope fiend escapee driving a Holden Monaro is shouting over Police radio...just before he meets Max.

Of course! It's been too long that I've seen any Mad Max movie. I was of course thinking of the Knight Rider! My bad. How embarrassing!

Doesn't seem a big deal to leave the engine running, so long as the car isn't so messed up it's backfiring flames out the intake, or exhaust. Worse is the guy who will fill up with a lit cigarette in his mouth, though with a breeze, probably not an issue. Still, caution is in order when handling gasoline.

no need, just slack-arseness

I leave mine running if I'm going to be standing there next to it. There is no good reason to shut it off. I'm not worried about the .000000000000000001 gallon it's going to use while idling for 1.5 minutes.

No one here has given one reason it's more dangerous from a fire point of view.

My car has an e-brake and I tested it early on that it would hold the car still if it magically jumped into drive from park. Between the parking mechanism and e-brake I think the car getting away is not an issue. Ever try to get a manual transmission into gear without pushing the clutch in?

What it does is save one starting cycle (starter wear, no oil pressure, etc) which adds up over the life of the car. In the summer I leave the AC running. In the winter I leave the heater running. Never had a problem with the TL throwing a code.
