like toll collectors on a bridge??

Instead of arguing why not...what is the reason FOR needing the engine on while you refuel ?

Some conspiracy theory ?

The kids in the car need the air con on ?

Why do people NEED the car running ?

Valid reasons only...

Hybrids don't have starters. So that does not matter. Other than a Hybrid I've not seen a car that shuts off at a light.

I've never had a check engine light on many different cars while they run at fillup. I don't get back into the vehicle so no worries about static build up. Never had a fire.

I'll continue to fuel my vehicles like I have SAFELY for decades

Take care, bill

Bill, how does the gasoline engine start in a hybrid?! From what I have read the car companies are going to use the hybrid technology of shutting the engine off when stopped in regular cars to improve mpg......

Anyone who's spent a winter in Wyoming or a summer in Texas understands why it's desirable to leave the car running. In Wyoming with sub-zero temps and howling winds, I turn the heater on full blast, get out, fill the car and jump back in before my tears and post-nasal drip begin to freeze.

In Texas, it's nice to jump back into a cool car, especially if you're trussed up in work duds.

Just to add to this thread, I've never done this. Always shut the car off when re-fueling. Never thought about it; just blindly followed the rule(?) that this is 'what you're supposed to do'.....

The other reason to turn off the vehicle when fueling is to do with the evap canister. When the car is off I believe a valve is closed which prevents gas from being able to get into and soak the charcoal evap canister.
