The signs on the pumps saying shut the engine off only apply to others?

The pumps also say to stay within sight of the pump while it's operating. These signs are there for a reason, and not because the station owner is sticker happy.

They're right next to the "Enhanced with Ethanol!" signs.
I tend to take what's written on signs for what it's worth.

Well, my SpeedPass is on my keychain, so I pretty much need to shut the car off before getting gas. plus, I might go inside and grab a drink. My car has no issues starting, so I don't feel a need to let it run. Even up north, the car never got cold on the inside in the time it took me to fill up.
I guess we all have to find a way to be a rebel. This just isn't my method.

True enough I suppose. I've been pumping gas for 35+ years and I've never had one not shut off and fuel spew forth.
I'm also not saying I TRUST the mechanism, I've just never had one fail on me.

Those things are a PIA.

Ive never done it. What freaks me out is when people filling up while blabing away on their cell phones. It even says on the pumps not to talk on cell phones.

I have had to clean up more spills than I can count due to unattended pumps. My phiolsophy is it's a machine, don't trust it. Even KITT turned on Michael in one episode (the "real" Knight Rider, not the ripoff). I had someone say to me after I had the pump shut off becasue they walked away "I figured you were there and were watching the pump."
I was pulling trash and told him that we are required to post signs to remind people to stay at the fueling point to prevent anything happening.

Besides the 50¢ spring firemachine mentioned, you're depending on bubbling gas to reach the tiny hole about several inches down from the nozzle to shut the flow.
I've also seen signs indicating not to use the nozzle upside down, or this automatic shut off feature may not work. Good to know when I'm using the hose stretched over to the other side of the car.

maybe if he shut it down while refuelling it won't start again.
I've had that where I didnt want to shut it down. i did anyway. the stupid VW 93 jetta 1.8 carb did not start. i was a wee lad and tried to jumpstart wihtout knowing how to, almost blew the battery up.

Cars with a running engine should have an operator at the controls. What's so difficult about comprehending that? Even a NASCAR vehicle has a driver behind the wheel while being fueled with the engine running.
