Interesting timing re discussions, Oil changes and stuff.

Some of you probably know my E30 beater, I bought a few plant shutdowns ago for the princely sum of $1,300, with a chequered history of stereo fanboys and interior decorators (half the interior is still magenta).

When I picked up the car, it came with a spare sump (plate welded to the bottom to cover a gaping hole (I've graded a few roads with the existing sump, so I can see why), a 5 cylinder block (#2 exited the side under prior ownership).

No idea of the mileage, and no idea of current Oil mileage, as the odometer and trip meters are dead...but it's 6 months.

Car is driven almost solely to work and back, and around town. Have been struggling holding battery charge in winter, as it's run for 11 mins each way to work, and a similar amount of around town running most afgternoons.

Consumes a little over a litre per OCI, and is topped up with whatever needs to be gone.

Oil filters are Purolator, and for a Ford 6 and V-8s (our Z-9), as I bought a box of 12 on ebay for $56, verus $26 for the right part for the beemer.

Oil has been changed at 6 month intervals, using a variety of stuff. Caltex lawn mower star 30, Penrite Euro diesel (right price), and most recently, 60:40 Delvac 1 and Castrol Magnatec SP mix (needed them gone from stash)...

Both known for their ester content.

6 months since last oil change is up, middle of winter, and I've got 4x5 litre jugs of Repco/Penrite Conventional 15w40 burning a hole in my stash (at $20 each, it's an absolute steal)...in an interesting act of synchronicity, I also have two bottles of Auto-Rx, given to me by a hunchback in NY

So today was oil change day.

And I pulled the cover.

Cover looks great, but it's not the one from this long engine, last owner liked the black anodised ones and fitted it...whatever I've been running, has certainly kept it clean.

Top end looks about the same as it did when I adjusted the lash. For completeness, I added some auto RX in my early ownership of it.

Business card analyses looked pretty good in this OCI...and all of them.

Engine DOES have issues. Drinks some oil, blue smoke after ever-run from 80MPH in 3rd on re-applying the throttle. Some inlet/Crank-case air leaks for sure given the condition of the hoses.

And the air cleaner (to be truthful, rock/bug catcher at best) does seem to be over-oiled, but the issue seems to be from within rather than anything that I'm doing to it.

Plan is to run some miles to work, do a blotter test, and put in some Auto-Rx.

Then we won't see much until Christmas.
