DUI checkpoint

Too bad they can't setup "cell phoning while driving" check points...I mean, if these things are done to increase driver's safety, then why not go after ALL the dangerous actions? Cell phone use while driving is every bit as dangerous as drunk driving, if not moreso...

No he doesn't...he displays a thug mentality...

^I believe that is because you can't legislate common sense. And, there are SOME who can multitask in that way. Most don't seem to be able to do so based upon my observations.

This is one of those laws I call irrational because it's almost completely unenforceable. The random unlucky person who gets caught is just filling some municipalities coffers and will most likely not stop doing it.

In Texas, handheld phone use in school zones was outlawed years ago. Perhaps it is easier to catch violators due to the 20 mph speeds. And, while I totally agree with the reasoning behind the law I still think the enforcement is spotty and ineffective. I wish I could tell you what the solution should be.

I don't know what exactly a MORI mentality is, I see someone looking for attention and stirring the pot trying PO people. If that's his mission here he's doing a great job. I should look into that ignore feature, but I just keep reading his nonsense and laughin.-RD

Good fun! Merry Christmas guys!

Actually, in a controlled environment test (at Speed Zone) I ran my best lap at just over .08.

Familiarity with the track and a little extra liquid courage were probable factors.

There was a sharp decline after .10. Really noticeable.

So the push in my state (by the pedestrian council no less) for .02 doesn't have any merit behind it ?

As to the Pedestrian Council, this is interesting.

I know a few people who have lost sons to falling off the kerb into traffic.

Talk show hosts have been known to fight against that. Hilltown some years ago tried that, A radio talkshow host fought tooth and nail against that, and won.

What's so hard about pulling to the side of the road if you have to use one anyway?

Having a conversation with someone while on speaker is supposed to be ok. However, I do agree with you... Facebook, texts, and all in Internet is also right there, and then it does become dangerous and distracted driving.

I will venture to say that distracted driving is nothing new. When I was in high school it was putting on makeup, driving with kids on laps, messing with the old manual radio tuning knobs, looking at your passenger and gesticulating while chatting, etc. It certainly is more prevalent now, but the state of "cranium in rectal storage" has been around as long as humans.

The fact that I see - DAILY - people driving for miles with turn signals on says it all. I'm not talking one every now and then. I'm talking multiple drivers, DAILY. Humanity has no bright future.

Driving may be a privilege, but that doesn't mean that the police can violate the 4th amendment.

Well lets see I have been behind the wheel of my vehicle (again..driving a privilage not guaranteed by the 4th Amendment) probably 25,000+ hours. I have been stopped twice for a License checkpoint. So 15 minutes out of 25,000 hours is a problem for you??? OK...A drunk driver killing me..now there's a problem.

The Supreme Court has declared that these stops are not a violation of the 4th Amendment individual States may prohibit it but its not an issue of Incorporation as part of the 14 Amendment.

Pretty good odds it won't happen. Much better odds around me to have a deer come flying through the windshield.

The drunk drivers around here that cause the fatalities would likely cause one at a checkpoint by not stopping or running somebody over. We are talking about the barely conscious, not somebody who had one too many at the company Christmas party.

The reason these checkpoints are allowed is because it's pretty tough to speak out against ANY activity aimed at reducing DUI. Remember, I said my daughter was almost killed nine months ago by a drunk (0.19 BAC) driving the wrong way on a divided highway? I'm still not for the checkpoints.

Here is a claim I am willing to make. The VAST majority of people arrested for DUI, especially at these checkpoints, would not have caused accidents. The things I see sober people doing on the roads daily are the things that kill people.

But, by all means, rationalize your freedom and rights away.

No issues with the cops. They behaved well while they searched through my truck, my cooler, my food and my belongings. Being from Florida, and traveling in Vermont may have created a need for additional scrutiny. Still, there were no issues between me and the cops.

The issue was that I had to wait and wait and wait for my turn at the checkpoint. It was located at the bottom of a hill, just prior to an intersection. On Route 7, which is a major thoroughfare, much of the road has a high speed limit and always has plenty of traffic. Initially, I had no idea it was a checkpoint and no idea how long the backup was.

I'm still annoyed about it.
