I could not believe I could not find this filter in the search function but the only reference was relative to the same reason I asked the question. The sale at Advance Auto for 5 qts Havoline syn and a Driveworks filter for $20. There were a couple of negative remarks but no facts. So what is the story on a Driveworks filter and if it must go with the deal is it worth it for the average drive?

I took advantage of that sale to get 5W-20 and the filter for my MIL's Rav4. The filter, a cartridge type, appears the same as the Purolators I've used in her car before. It came with both o-rings and the little filter housing draining tool, so from what I can tell it's fine. I can't imagine AAP would sell something that doesn't meet whatever spec the OEM requires.

I'm sure they are fine, even the cheap filters nowadays are fine as long as they don't go over 5K
There are pictures of several(threads) DW filters cut open here in the oil filter section. They don't look bad at all. The worst thing that I read about them in those threads is some startup noise but, the noise is not consistant from filter to filter. Many owners don't experience any startup noise and no one want to hear any noise
I picked up a couple comments off the review site for Advance Auto. The negatives posted were for a misformed rubber seal, metal shavings that the reviewer said matched the threaded portion but cost him an engine even after removing and changing filter. [who knows??] and a comment or two that they are fine for people who change oil often. The only reason I could figure for that last comment was because one individual said the DW filter for his car was shorter than what he had been using so possibly there is less filter material??? Do we know who makes this filter?

Picked up the AAP 5 quarts of Mobil 5000 and Driveworks filter for $20 to put in my sister's '98 CRV. I have no doubt it is at least as good as whatever Jiffy Lube put in there last time.

Careful, both the Fram 3614 and 3600 filters cross reference to the Driveworks 3614 size.
Same base and bypass pressure, a third smaller for the 3614 than the 3600...

Running a smaller filter doesn't really have any draw backs for regular OCI's though. Extended drains, sure. But I wouldn't have a problem running a smaller filter that has the same specs.
I picked up the deal at AA today. I saw the offer to change to a Puralator filter for $2. I told the salesman as we were looking up the filter part numbers for my Jeep GC that if the Driveworks was a smaller filter then I would go with the Puralator. They both were the same size and the rubber ring on the DW looked fine so I saved the $2.

I'm not saying they are a bad filter, but I'm not a fan after my experience.

I ran two of these Driveworks filters with different results. One was in a KIA and had a 2 second start up tick and the other was in a Honda accord with no issue. Both cars took the same Driveworks filter part number IIRC.
The use in the KIA I will a pass on the rattle as KIA's are known to have a high bypass PSI and many aftermarket non OEM's are not rated for it and will rattle/tick on start up.
As mentioned already, my experience was the same in that after 5K, the ADBV was hard and not pliable. I would still take a Driveworks over a standard FRAM OCOD any day.

I changed the oil in the Rav4 mentioned above yesterday. The Driveworks filter was visually identical aside from having black plastic ends vs. blue for the Purolator, and a different part code printed on it. Size, apparent # of pleats, etc were all the same. No self destruction yet.

Well any oil filter is good for 3000 miles even the Fram Extra Gaurd is okay if you change your oil each 3000 miles.
