Given the numerous oil consumption issues with this VCM motor and Honda's hardball position, I decided to play it straight down the middle. I am using Honda Genuine Full Synthetic 0W-20 SN and an OE filter.
For the record, this car has been in service since last March and has burned about 1/3 Qt in about 6500 miles-acceptable in my book. Most of the oil burners reveal themselves after the FF is replaced, and its extended use is one of Honda's "fixes" for the problem. We know from VOAs on the HG oil that it's distinguishing composition (if one can call it that) is ~100ppm moly and ~200 ppm boron. Apparently a fairly typical modern CP formulation.
The car is driven gently and 99% city miles so the VCM is activated frequently but only for short durations. It seems the problem engines have a lot of highway miles where the cylinder deactivation is operative for long stretches. we know from public Honda pronouncements that they changed the oil control rings in the 2011 models plus added moly impregnation of the piston skirts (which kind of adds to my curiosity about this OA).
