When 5-20 first came out, all I saw were SynBlends and full SYN.

M1 had their 0-20.

I have had MoCraft SynBlend 5-20 in my '01GMLS since new.

I thought I had read that 5-20 had to be synblend b/c of its nature.

Now Coastal, Havoline, Valvoline AC, and others are making dino 5-20 with no mention of being a blend.

How good are these dino 5-20's.

Your thoughts please.

I recall that it was implied that a 5w-20 had to be a synth blend to meet the specs. This is apparently not the case.

It really depends upon how "synthetic" is defined. Motorcraft uses some Group III which isn't "really" a true synthetic. Havoline uses Group II but they probably use a more agressive additive package. It's "six to one a half dozen to another". Both Motorcraft and Havoline 5W-20's have shown real good UOA's. So who's to say which is better

IslandVic:

Over at our Panther site, I wrote about seeing 5-20 for the first time. It was at a police fleet garage. It was Motorcraft in a black bottle, and apparently simple dino.

Within a year, some engines were failing with 25K on them. Pretty soon, orange bottles began arriving, marked "synthetic blend." Still, the shop opted to use the old Motorcraft 5-30 again, and never any problems.

I'm sure, that 5-20 conventional today, but have a muchly improved base-stock and additive package. Or else, Ford would be having warranty nightmares...

We DO know it's all about CAFE. If I were going to use 5-20, it would be a real-deal TRUE synthetic, like Royal Purple or Mobil 1.

In my use of the lightweight stuff (which is admittedly limited), I get the impression that the difference between a dino, semi, or full synth will be the length of service that they can endure (in applications where they are suitable for use).

Ulver, your sig is freaking awesome.

MoCraft 5-20 seems to work well in the GMLS, but it's driven easy and has really low miles.

The Vic though likes to drink oil, so it's not getting the 5-20.

I talked with an oil rep about that same things, he said a lot of the motors were coming back 2 quarts low. This for a week oil change by the way. Scary.

YES! Ford did make the claim that the Vic P/I's were being operated at times, several quarts low.

The departments argued that it never was thought, that a NEW Police Interceptor, would be using oil. Ford returned with some fairly shocking figure. I can't recall it exactly, but the bottom line was: Ford told depts., that the oil needed to be checked more often. Burning was not restricted to aged Vics.

Dino 5-20's ?? Non nein nyet Geen não ingen 不 ...oh yes, and NO! I follow the Chinese proverb: 不在我的汽車!

GP I will not meet 5/20 specs for Noack but GP II and GP III will. And GPII and GPIII are good as PAO only lacking pour point and volitlity.

I'm starting to think most Vicks use oil so now i don't fell so bad.My 99 Grand Marquis with HPP uses a little and my dad's 05 Vick uses a little. His is still breaking in though. My 99 was using at least a quart at 1500 miles while braking in then got a little better after that.

When did the Crown Vick go the 6 quart pan?
My dad gets short changed a quart every time he gets it changed on his 05 Vick.Must be recently.I assume the Marquis is the same way.

The Crown Vics, Grand Marquis, and Town Cars got 6-quart oil sumps beginning in 2003.

Most of them seem to use about a quart every so often - perhaps every two or three thousand miles - but some don't. I have a 1995 Crown Vic LX that doesn't use a drop of oil.
