Debit Card hacked

You might be talking to actual fraudsters in India, not the actual bank. Go to a bank branch and speak to someone in native English with long pants on and get this resolved. Any big bank will not charge you a thing and get this resolved immediately. Read the link below. Did she report it after 60 days?

Last week, I called my credit union to get a replacement CC. Within two hours, I was bombarded with phone calls with the ID showing as the credit union. This continued well past their closing time. I finally answered "WHAT?", and a foreign-voiced person said they were calling from "the fraud department " and someone had tried to use my card for a $1500 transaction and did I make it. I told them I thought this was a scam and they said "Check the number, it's from us". I told them I can easily spoof a phone number and hung up. They continued calling and I blocked the number.

Called the credit union the next day and was told they were getting tremendous amounts of calls related to this issue.

Like Reagan always said: "Trust, but verify!"

The place where she used the card last time may be the culprit.
There are a lot of reels on YT showing hacked card reader at gas station convenience store and at the gas pump.
That place may be where they put some of this hacked card reader to steal the info including pin.
Almost always gas stations or convenience stores, I only use debit at my bank ATM machine for cash withdrawal.

The Indian accent always a tip off for more caution.

Looks like a lot of people are either misinformed about debit cards or their bank/credit union sucks. My credit union treats debit cards the same as credit cards.

If my card is used for fraudulent activity, will I be responsible for the charges involved?
No! As a member of Wright-Patt Credit Union®, you are covered under our “zero liability policy” for fraudulent charges on your credit and debit cards.

My Visa Debit Card (check card) from Navy Federal has been fraudulently used about five times over the last 25 years. I've never once been charged a cent for these transactions; NFCU has always nullified the suspect charges and reissued a new card within 48 hours.

I think WECU does the same, but I'm not sure people are misinformed about BANKS (suck part)

It's a personal decision as others have stated. It's like investing. KNOW WHAT YOU OWN.

If the PIN was actually used (and money was actually charged-- this whole thing could be a scam from start to finish), it's under different rules than the usual VISA / MC dispute. The customer must dispute to the bank in writing. A bank customer is always somewhat protected from any unauthorized removal of their money from the bank such as forged checks. However, in a case like this the bank wouldn't have anyone down the line to "claw back" the money from, so when the customer disputes they'll have to eat the cost to their bottom line. Thus they are not exactly your friend.

How'd they get her pin?
If I had to guess good chance it was skimmed when she used it someplace.

My wife has a business account she never uses her debit card with and somehow it's been compromised twice. I have a feeling her cards got compromised in the mail with the chip being read along the way.

In short never use debit card it's too risky either cash or credit card.

I have a debit card but only use it for ATM access. I hope your daughter is able to get resolution quickly.

As others have said, probably the last place she used it is responsible, but it's also possible that this may have been an insider at the bank/CU. Not going to bore you with the details but I had a card from one of the large, national banks hacked, and once that happened, I was getting a fraudulent charge once a quarter, someone trying to pay their Xfinity bill. I stopped using the replacement cards and it still happened. In last go-round with the bank's fraud department I suggested that this looked like it may be someone inside the bank doing this since I haven't done anything with the last 3 replacement cards but activate them. And after that, the issue seemed to stop.

I've been using my debit card since 1995 and never had an issue. I may have once, but the bank picked up on it and locked it. I don't carry cash around and use debit for all typical consumer retail purchases. I use CC at certain places to get rewards.

Had a problem with some false pending credit card charges.

When called, they told me it was probably a card skimmer and that the gas station I’d used had frequent skimmer attacks, which they’d noticed over the last few months. The stolen card # would be used for a small transaction to test if it worked. I’ve heard of cameras being put in place to record pin but they did not have mine.

….But they didn’t tell me until I called. FWIW some say the touch scan is more secure because it’s harder to steal.

Just signed up for the Irving Oil discount card, which gives a larger discount for direct debit. Might not be worth the exposure.

Not all banks/credit unions are created equal. The laws, and protections, pertaining to debit vs credit cards are vastly different.
My post/comment still stands. I'm confident that many comments scare-mongering against using debit cards are based on hearsay, not personal experience. And then if one's bank or credit union offers no protection to their customer, why do business with them ?

If your debit card is connected a bank account with FDIC insurance, is a debit card "hack" or theft a covered loss? I've had credit cards hacked and used fraudulently but never a debit card.

Years ago I got a high interest account and it came with a debit card which was mandatory.

I knew the bank manager and told her I never had one and didn't want one. She took care of that but that banks debit card version had options for the owner to limit the $$$ amount of transactions and the frequency of them which everyone should use to
Protect themselves.
An example is you only allow a max of $50 a day or week etc.
