Cybertrucks rust in the rain.

I figured this finish would be really hard to maintain well. If you've ever cleaned a stainless steel appliance and have any level of OCD you know how streaky it is. And how any water spots really stand out. And I'd like to think my kitchen is cleaner than an environment a truck would live in.

I have my doubts about how extensively they tested the steel. The early adopters are now doing the only testing that matters, on their dime. Maybe he can recall them and spray them with clear coat, or wrap them. Or give the early adopters some steel wool to polish them with. ;)
True, but it doesn’t take a metallurgical genius to know what stainless variants will “rust” or weep with what level of moisture exposure. Not new news…

Disappointing for sure. I wonder if deloreans ever had this issue.

Yep, someone blew it big time choosing whatever grade or brand of SS they used for that uglier than all hell Cyber truck. ;) I don't ever recall reading about DeLorean's having that problem, but I never cared to check.

i dont understand how during testing no one saw this or was qualified enough to know about this.

I still think an iron remover is all it takes to remove this.

Elon actually discovered a new grade of stainless steel that was never described in the scientific literature. Thats how cutting edge and experimental the cyber truck is.

Of course since its a new grade of stainless steel there will be new properties discovered like interaction with rain.

Tesla extensively tested the steel, but they can't test all possible interactions that the truck will experience in the real world.
I feel like when testing a vehicle that's going to be in the elements, testing it in the elements really isn't too out of the question...

Looks like they should have used 321 stainless. It was used alot on the old Hydrofoils years ago, lives just fine in highly corrosive conditions.

Wonder what country supply's that material to Tesla?

Not too difficult to test the corrosion resistance of any kind of steel. Test labs can simulate all kinds of environmental conditions. Sounds like a lack of design effort and testing by Tesla engineers.

So many questions. Is this really rust? We don't know for sure.

Is it rusting on the inner surface too?

Is it the type of rust that keeps growing and oxidizing of its own accord? Or does it stop at the surface?

If this is happening on the inner surface, too, and it penetrates deeply... Obviously that's a huge flaw.

Ummm ... Yeah, it's rust, after all stainless steel is iron that contains chromium. It will always be rust but it wont rust through.

There are a ton of different grades but I think the ones we speak of all will develop surface stains or rust if you want to call it that. It will be surface and not rust through. I THINK sometimes that chromium coating can wear then oxidizes the steel and surface rust appear. IT IS GOING TO HAPPEN TO ALL CYBER TRUCKS as Tesla is not currently coating the cars with a clear coat finish.

There is a lot online about stainless steel which I just even learned about now that I didnt know. It is basically Iron (steel) and chromium to limit corrosion but that doesnt mean it will remain pretty. Some marine grades do but someone else here pointed out that type of grade is not conducive or even cost effective to work with.

Looks like if you pay Tesla another $5,000 they will contain the rust for you by wrapping it with a coating, imagine that!

There's some speculation that it was actually rail dust. 🤷‍♂️ If it's just a surface patina, personally I think that would be cool.

Can we have some pictures of the iron oxide?

Do we have the root cause YET? (This thread is speculative, at least admit that)

No not defending Tesla, if you think this, then I know you have never worked in manufacturing, or quality or engineering for manufacturing.

$5,000 extra to contain rust, LOL for sure. Smart business would be to hike the price and contain the rust to avoid the negative attention/press Cyber Trucks are getting because they're rusting. Bad business imo.

Lots of jumping to conclusions here. Don't some of your legs get tired ?
One or two reports of rusting don't make for a known and serious problem. Especially given the tendency for clickbait driven stories and how easily the Tesla and Musk haters are manipulated.

Lets see in a few months if it really is an issue. I seriously doubt it. Especially considering it took three years of development.
Sure, it probably water spots. So does a black paint job. I would be curious what the owners manual for the Cybertruck says regarding care of the body, if anything. If i owned one I'd surely keep it waxed with one of the modern ceramic or graphene over the counter wax products just like I do with my painted cars.

But go ahead and keep speculating and criticizing about the what ifs and hows if that makes you feel good.
