Curious Why Motul & Redline Oils are only MA

In shopping the various high quality 10W-40 oils Redline and Motul make for
motorcycles it appears they are both rated as MA. I expected to see MA2 on these
pricy oils.

Recently swapped my '11 Can Am for a new '14 Can Am with 3 cyl motor and was considering
whether I want to try something different Mostly I've used Amsoil but recently
have been trying Castrol Blend. Will probably stick with Amsoil for the new one. Interesting that BRP has extended the oil changes to 9000 miles on these new motors. I'll prob lab test
at 4K with a view to changing at 5K, depending upon what the lab test shows.

MA and MA2 are two different specs. Doesn't mean MA2 is better. Just different.

Let me clarify this... MA is the old nomenclature. MA was subsequently subdivided into MA1 and MA2. Depending on the exact friction test results, an MA oil could fall into either MA1 or MA2 category.

What spec does the owner's manual call for?

Looks like the owner's manual doesn't mention JASO...

But considering it's a wet clutch/shared sump setup, having the JASO approval would probably not hurt.

Always best to make sure any oil you use has some sort of wet clutch compliance certification. On the HDEO if its not JASO approved, then the Allison C4 usually means its good. Otherwise you have to do a VOA to see if there are any non friendly additives.

New Motul oils are Jaso MA2 Aproved.
I think the "old" Motul's meets Jaso MA2 but don't are certified.

Depending on where they score on the actual friction test results, the old MA would fall either under MA1 or MA2 designation... JASO has basically split the MA category into two ranges...

I've got a couple gals of Castrol Blend to use up on early changes during break-in, and unless it lab tests far better than it did on my prev Can Am, then I'll go Motul or Amsoil...again subject to lab testing.
