Under normal operation, with the tractor off, you can barely push the tractor forward or in reverse unless you pull the release button. Well lately i have noticed that power in reverse is sluggish and you can push the tractor forward while it is off and it is similar to when you have the release pulled. You cannot however push it backwards unless you pull the release. Any idea what this would be? I called my local dealer and was told that it is too complicated for anyone that has not been to school for this transmission. I thought that was a little weird.

It works perfect in forward, but it is more sluggish in reverse.

I was always able to push my 2544 regardless of bypass position. It was relatively hard to push though and much easier if the bypass rod was pulled. I don't recall ever trying it in reverse. If it's any consolation, my new Z-Force can be shoved while not in bypass as well. My bypass was always finicky on the 2544 and would take a bunch of fiddling while rocking the tractor back/forth to get it to take. The rod just mashes a paddle against a spring loaded button on the hydrostat. Work that button by had to make sure it's releasing. It just opens an internal oil passage AFAIK. As far as the slow reverse goes, mine was always slow. If yours got slower, it's most likely wear in the linkage and time for an adjustment. Some guys have put extensions on their reverse pedals to give them more range of motion and faster reverse. What oil and filter do you have in the trans?

As far as i know, the linkage adjustment is only if it creeps forward or backward when in neutral.

Joel, I have also been able to push mine, but it was very difficult, meaning the tires would slide then roll an inch, then slide, ect. There is now almost no difference with the release lever pulled or not pulled. It is most definately not right. It still acts correctly in reverse, just not forward. I have rotella 15w40 in the trans, with an OEM filter. When the tractor is off, and im pushing it in forward, it makes no difference where the drive pedel is. You can rock it back and forth between forward and backward and it makes no difference. Are there release valves that only work in one direction?, other than the main relase valve.

With the release pulled, the machine should roll fairly easily in either direction. I've always found them to still have some resistance though, regardless of make/model. If I parked my 2544 on any slope and didn't lock the parking brake, it would roll downhill. I'd always have to feather the reverse pedal in sloped situations when I was using the machine and didn't want to keep rolling/creeping. You should try my old Case 220 Hydrive (hydraulic drive as opposed to hydrostatic). There's no resistance going downhill unless you work the travel speed/direction lever towards reverse. Very scary.

Double check the linkage.

I have a 2146 Cub, so it may be a different transmission, but there is a plate located under the dipstick, IIRC. You have to remove the rear hitch plate to access the transmission plate, just 4 bolts I believe. Anyway, under that plate is an o-ring that will sometimes go bad. A new o-ring, and good to go.

Again, may not be your problem, and yours may not even have that plate, but definitely a cheap solution if it is the problem.

Jack up the rear of the mower so the fluid runs to the front of the transmission before removing that plate to minimize fluid loss.

Yep, starting with the 2544, it a whole different transaxle than on the 2146.
