Practically new, only used once(spring,IIRC started hard(inital) back then too), now the motor won't start all. Really have not the time to troubleshoot but suggestions on what to look for, easy fix, etc is appreciated. TIA.

Always remember the four requirements for a gasoline engine to run:

Fuel
Spark
Timing
Compression

The first two are the easiest to check, and often are the cause (especially on a newer engine).

Pull the plug, ground it on the engine while pulling the starter, and watch for a bright spark. (Don't zap yourself). Replace plug if needed.

With the plug installed, pull the starter, remove the plug, and see if it is wet with fuel. Check the fuel lines? Maybe a carburator problem? Old fuel? Carburator would take too much explaining for now.

Timeing? Did you hit a big rock and maybe shear the crankshaft key?

Compression? Need a tester. Maybe a valve or ring problem. Requires some skill to repair.

Try the easy things first. Plug, fresh gas, etc..

Good luck

Fresh gas, stabilizer, and running the gas out before storage tends to be the most helpful things I have found for starting problems.

With an old drill you don't care about and a drill-drive-to-3/8" adaptor* put on a 7/8" 12 point socket. Remove the starter cover (easy). The socket should fit over the square key and you'll be able to turn the motor over with the drill faster and longer than you'd ever be able to with a starter rope.

If you get it running, let it run out of gas so you can get some fresh in.

I resurrected an old rototiller I found at the dump by doing this... so don't laugh.

*Beware of kickbacks; I've ruined two drills in their gearboxes by doing this

Check for spark, then dump the old gas, fill with new and give it a squirt of ether. Probably will start right up. If not, I would suspect the carb.
