A south Fulton County woman was shot late Thursday night by intruders who broke into her home near Fairburn, police said.
Fulton County police said the home invasion and shooting happened just before midnight Thursday in the 4900 block of Estonian Drive.
The victim, who was home alone, heard the intruders breaking in, called 911 and hid somewhere in the house, but the burglars found her and shot her, police said.
The woman, identified as Milissa Burke, 54, was taken to Atlanta Medical Center in stable condition.
The burglars took several items from the home and fled in a stolen Honda, which police later found abandoned nearby.

This is why you should at least carry you pistol when at home, the world is crazy, just saying. I know , it will never happen to you...so why do u carry auto insurance since things never happen to you? There is no tone..............

Agree. Better to have a gun and not need it, than to need it and not have it. Call 911 and they will come, but too late.

+1 Those who wish to take our firearms from us "for our own good" will always have bodyguards.

Or, will just continue whining about us exercising our rights.

(btw: I hear MA is a horrible state for guns. True?)

Far superior and more effective method of protecting your home in this case is a barking dog or alarm.

I am indifferent to gun ownership but it is not a deterrent more a final resort and beyond rare one at that.

I am willing to be due to a blind bet that more folks are injured by loaded guns in home than crimes in progress stopped.

Auto insurance is to protect other people and your creditors from you, not the other way around. That's why it's mandatory as a condition of driving.

As to your first point - this is only correct if the likelihood of being victimized by a criminal is decreased by a greater amount than the likelihood of that same firearm being involved in an accidental (or otherwise, say enraged/drunk spouse, suicide) shooting. ie. what's more likely - 1) stopping or detering a crime in your home with a gun, or 2) accidentally shooting yourself or someone else, facilitating a more successful suicide attempt, escalating a "regular" assault and battery into a shooting, etc. If you're going to make the statement above you should be prepared to provide quality data to back it up.

Hoops are required to be jumped through to get a carry permit.... unless, of course, you are one of the "beautiful people" . For a while they were bustubg HUNTERS traveling through the state to Maine , NH and Vermont for broken down rifles carried in the TRUNKS of cars.

How true. Funny how some national senators have applied for and received concealed carry permits, but at the same time have campaigned against letting the common Joe have one himself.

No, have one in the house, but you need smoke detectors. People who die in house fires usually are asleep or they would know to get out.

I like the dog idea. By all means prevent the situation of needing to use a gun, but have the gun just in case.

According to the FBI, 4,000 crimes are stopped or prevented by CCW permit holders and gun owners...per day.

According to the CDC the average number of people injured in gun accidents: about 600...per year.

Less than motor vehicle accidents, falling, poisoning, suffocation, drowning, fires/ fatal burns, environmental/nature, pedestrian accidents, or being struck by or hitting a foreign object.

Some people are allergic to dogs. An alarm system depends upon the reaction time of the police. Good options, to be sure. I wouldn't fault anyone for relying on them. Good enough for many, perhaps best for those who hate guns, prevented from ownership or are lousy with guns. But they aren't failsafe either.

Dogs and alarm systems are great deterrents just like the locks on your doors and windows, but they won't stop a determined bad guy. A gun is also a great deterrent, but it has the ability to stop the threat should the need arise.

Alarms scare off the VAST majority of intruders as does a dog. Intruders are interesting in easy targets not getting into confrontation. Otherwise they would walk up to your front door and engage you. How often does that actually happen compared to unannounced?

How is a gun a deterrent if the intruder does not know if you own one?

Vast =/= all. Also, what happens if the houses are so far apart that no one would hear a siren?

A house's alarm system isn't designed to alert your neighbors. It is designed to alert you, a criminal and the police.

why get a CCW? cuz it is much simpler to carry a glock than carry a 300 lb policeman around the entire day. Not to mention the doughnut crumbs!
