costco sells an old style (that means it does not match the new front loader washers) whirlpool electric dryer but is old style, simple, no electronics. about $500
has anyone bought one?
can you buy an extended warranty?
whirlpool model is wed 4910 xq, costco part 565889

anyone got one?

We bought an Amana gas dryer from Costco Aug 2013. So I can not speak to the electric Whirlpoot, but the price included delivery, setting in place, and hauling away the old dryer. Went very well. I was happy with the service.

I had to hook up the new dryer. So far so good. We don't use it much. Mostly we use the solar clothes dryer.

No knowledge of that particular dryer, but we currently use a 17 year old Whirlpool. Has dial controls and auto sensing for cut off. No repairs of any kind required.

Dryers are pretty reliable and are generally repairable for a small cost. We are not as picky about dryers as we are about washing machines.

Suggest you also look at sears.com. They have a sale going on, and are selling 8 different electric dryers for $350 to $500. All are relatively basic. Don't know who makes Kenmore dryers these days, but our past Kenmore dryers were also great performers.

A electric dryer is pretty much the same as it has been for 50 yrs. Less electronics means less to break. The old Kenmores USED to be rebadged Whirlpools.

I just bought an Admiral dryer from home depot delivered for $300. Admiral is owned by whirlpool and it was made in the U.S. that price included removal of my old dryer too.

I had a high efficiency washer for 2 years and went back to conventional. My Whirlpool washer and dryer have been great. The dryer is huge, and the 3.6 cubic foot washer can actually wash a larger load because the agitator keeps clothes moving.
I sold appliances for Sears, and the Whirlpool made units carried the highest level of customer satisfaction and durability versus the LG, Samsung, Bosch, GE, or Frigidair made units.
Too bad LG is making all the Kenmore laundry now.

A lot of these older dryers are the same mechanically. Parts available and cheap.
Very easy to work on. The last one I have was purchased used for $50. Replaced a thermal fuse last month $5. Back working. I am a Costco fan but $500 is too much.

+1

other than fancy settings and sensors, there hasnt been much change. But remember that not everything is cheaper at Costco, so do your due diligence and make sure its a deal.

I have a Whirlpool that's 10-11 years old now and it works just fine. I did have to replace the belt/idler pulley but that was really easy and only $50.

One thing I would look for and actually can reduce your energy usage is to make sure it has a good moisture sensing system.

We went from one of those "old, simple" POS dryers that would bake our clothes to a modern one with a good sensor and "the fancy prone to break electronics" (that have never broken) and our clothes are no longer shrunk or baked stiff. I think we also saved energy but went from electric to gas (there was a capped off gas line nearby) so can't say.

you are right on the moisture sensor- many whirlpools now have those, better than just a temperature control

note all whirlpool (includes amana maytag and some others) machines are now made in ohio (USA YEAH)
