Cost of .22 Ammo

I checked 7.62x39 the other night. Wow. I'm still shooting Golden Tiger I bought in 2006 for $.17/rd., shipped.
I loaded up many years before that, and look in amazement at the cost of ammo. I have 500 round bricks of Remington Target ammo for .22LR marked $7.99. LOL It is going to be painful when the time comes to buy more. I also reload, I stocked up on powder, primers, and brass. As one example 8 LB jugs of Varget were under $40. Now I wish I bought more!!!

Federal red box suppressor about .08
Fin feather fur sale, otherwise .10 elsewhere.
Only ammo that feeds in my sig p322.
Even cci jams.

I would like to see the price tag on 8lbs of Varget for $40. I’ve been reloading since 1992 and cheapest I remember any powder was $10 per pound.

Sorry you'll have to take my word for it, the price tag and label is illegible. I started reloading in the mid 80's and it wouldn't surprise me if the jug I'm referring to dates back that far.

Edit to add: I see you're from PA, IIRC I bought it from Troxell's in PA while visiting Williamsport. I still have primers from them.

Varget didn’t come out until 1996.

That's fine, I bought the powder from Troxell's in PA I had to go there at least a dozen times over the years. They had some great sale prices from time to time. You don't want to believe me that's fine. FTR Varget came out in 1995. Enjoy the day.

Be happy. Here in Sweden CCI Standard cost 1,6 SEK about 17.3 US cent
Remington Thunderbolt 1.15 SEK about 12.42 US Cent

Keep shooting (y)

Thanks for offering us in the States some perspective. We should be happy but sometimes still like to complain. :giggle:

Our club has been doing some large group ammo buys including CCI SV and we are getting them at 6.04 US cents per round before sales tax. You do have to buy them in 5,000 round cases.

Best regards

You are complaining about $.09 per round? We pay $1 per round plus the $5 background check plus 8.75 tax

.22lr ammo prices can be in very wide range. There is bulk ammo that's on cheaper side and there is match ammo that can cost more than 5x. Semi autos may not like some ammo so one needs to test a few brands and varieties. Bolt guns are usually more forgiving but if accuracy and consistency is required then some testing of diff brands, varieties and lot numbers is in order.
I shoot only bolt rifle in that caliber and while CCI Std Velocity shoots well out of my gun, I like SK ammo better but it's more expensive; there is better ammo but it makes no diff or sense for my shooting.
Subsonic or standard velocity ammo normally shoots more accurately and consistently but if you need to go beyond 300 yards you may have to use high velocity ammo.
