Another area of shooting I've just about given up on is bullet casting. I must have at least 20+ bullet molds, all bubble wrapped in rust preventative. Back in the 70's and 80's when I was working in the machining trades, our purchasing agent where I worked could get me scrap lead, and even scrap Linotype if I was lucky, for next to nothing.
And back then the only lead bullets you could buy were those crappy swaged lead .38 wadcutters from Speer. They were filthy. But they were the only game in town if you didn't cast your own.
Fast forward to today and you have places like Berry's and many others, that offer the reloader just about any kind of lead bullet you could want. Both coated and uncoated. Most are hard cast, and won't lead the barrel at high velocity.
I doubt I could sell my bullet molds today for 10 cents on the dollar. And scrap lead is all but unobtainable today, because everyone is on the anti toxic bandwagon. And if you do find it, the cost isn't worth it.
And many scrap yards today, (depending where you live), will buy scrap lead from consumers, but are not allowed to sell it to them. Only commercial smelters. I keep my molds only because I've got about 1,500 pounds of casting alloy ingots, neatly stacked in the corner of my garage...... "Just in case".
