So on my Capri last September i switchd from Mobil 2000 10w40 Semi Synthetic to Shell HX3 20w50 , i notice that the HX3 Is turning dark way faster than the Mobil 2000 which used to stay fairly golden coloured on the dipstick , HX3 is a Group 1 conventional with a pretty light additive package so i assume it's due to that is it? i'm switching to Valvoline VR1 soon which is a Grp. II oil but i have read that it doesn't have a very high level of detergents so will it also turn dark quickly?, i've done about 1000 Km or 600 miles since i changed it, i plan on doing 1 year oci's , should i stick to that or change it say every 6 months running VR1? I do about 1200 Miles / 2000 Km a year, keep in mind you Americans that oil is a lot more expensive here about 6,6 Euro ( 7.50 $ ) a liter or quart ( a liter and a quart are almost the same )

it's around 110 in the hottest summer days , i run 20w50 because my owner's manual says so ! everybody i've asked on forums uses it and it helps to quieten down the engine and make it burn less oil , you'd be surprised how easy a 20w pours when it's 40c / 100 F outside!!

It could very well be the Shell product is cleaning something better than the Mobil product, or as others said it might have more detergents. That doesn't necessarily make it better. I don't want to go down that road.

Check your manual to know wich acea. And any oil with that acea or better(within your cathegory will do.i use the oil i use because its the best for my car.but if your car does not have all the Antipollution gizmo. Dont overthink this any oil is gona be good.We use 5w30 in big laurie 18 wheeler)at 1400rpm turbo yelling at 90000rpm at 925farenheight and oil does not even care. Muffler burn polution at 1200f lol oil still love the road(ok engine oil radiator is big. And radiator fan fir all that is huge(we ll likly get variable geometry radiator fan soon lol)bottom line if oil is hot get a oil radiator

$7.50 a quart isn't that bad at all. The cheapest we can get it is about $5.00 a quart at Walmart.

Why are you so baffled by the fact i use 20w50? the lowest temps we ever get here are -5c and that is only in a winter cold snap , the hottest days it can get to 40c, and no my car has no smog equipement at all , does a pcv valve count? no catalytic converters or anything, and no it's not a diesel it's carbed gas V6

Capri, don't mind the attempted brainwashing. I'm a 10W-40/20W-50 guy myself. I've got some thinner stuff in my stash, but it's getting mixed with thicker to make some nice semi syns.

I like Shell oils in general, but HX3 isn't really their best product IMO. Nothing wrong with 20w50 in your climate, 15w40 could work too. Shell have a very good range of HDEOs you could consider. Buying in 20L barrel should keep the price down.

Emissions equipment has nothing to do with viscosity.

Keep putting in thicker oil until it turns clear lmao. Enjoy the new car you will have to buy in a few months.

The people who wrote your owners manual know more about what your vehicle needs in hot weather than the self appointed doom and gloom "experts" here. I used 20w 50 in a SAAB in warm weather which went about 400K.

I plan on switching to Quaker State 10w40 in the winter, and continuing to run 20W-50 in the summer, and I may not even do that. I may just run 20W-50 year round. Anyone who honestly thinks thick oil will kill a car hasn't ever poured a bottle. Plus, my car isn't new, it's a '92 model. The OP's car is even older than that.

Lol. Don't listen to these people that believe in thin oil. 20w-50 is what the taxi cab company uses next to me in their vehicle fleet of ford crown vics here in miami. Anyways back to the topic- color doesn't always tell the story. Could be this has a higher cleaning detergent and that's what it's doing. Cleaning your engine! Get a used oil analysis whenever you decide to drain it.
