Consensus between M1, Purolator, and CarQuest Premium Oil Filters?

This is solid info. Has anyone tested flow rates with the Pentius? I'm tempted to try it out if it does not have similar pressure drops to the Purolators
I haven't seen any testing of the Pentius, but it seems to have more filter media than any other filter in the 7317 size, so it's a safe bet that it's less restrictive than most filters.

I ended up getting a Pentius PLXL7317 to try out for my next OCI which is some time away. However, people did mention to check QC closely as a result of the single bad QC report that was shared on Amazon.
I'm new to this "inspect your oil filter" thing, as historically I would just buy the M1 from WalMart and install without thought.

What exactly am I looking for in defective filter? with the exception of uncut core holes, burs, rattle when shaking? Are most defects pretty obvious?

Was skeptical at first to try Pentius PLXL since I've never heard of it, but looking through some reviews on BITOG, it looks like it's getting a lot of praise for it's quality. Curious how much more this will help to clean my oil compared to the M1-110A, as that is a concern I'm currently chasing.

My current OCI is about 3k miles more or less.

I bought a case of them last month, so I'm good for the next 4-5 years. I don't remember seeing any poor reviews on BITOG for the Pentius filters. If it was Amazon, take it for what it's worth.

Unless the filter you're comparing to has torn media or a leaking by-pass valve, don't expect this filter to clean your oil any better. My reason for going with this filter is strictly a level of confidence that its construction has seemingly been consistently good.

Agree 100%. The UFXL stands for Ultra Flow Extended Life.

The Purolator PL14610 has very small inlet holes in the base plate. At high flow rates, they could drop a lot of pressure. I calculated a pressure drop of around 6 or 7 psi at a flow rate of 60 L/min. Most filters would only drop 1-3 psi.

I'm not sure how much oil your engine will flow, but Honda's high revving performance engines tend to flow a lot. I would avoid the Purolator.

The Pentius PLXL7317 has the most filter media, followed by the Mobil 1. Both have quite a bit more media than the Carquest Premium. I'd choose the Pentius XL.
I highly doubt a Honda K23 oil pump puts 15.85 GPM (60 L/min) through the engine. Besides, a dP increase of only 3 more PSI across an oil filter isn't going to cause any lack of lubrication - ie, if an engine is getting 15 GPM of oil flow, then it's still going to be fine with 14 GPM, or if an engine is getting 10 GPM, then it will still be fine getting 9.5 GPM.

What's the pressure drop on the Purolators, from what source?

Here (literally lol). But if they're not good filters, that's the reason for my post
Epic ... 😄 But I wouldn't have the conclusion of "reading good things about Purolators". Now some Purolators (and Motorcrafts made by Purolator) are using that weak black glue on the end caps that comes off in use. Been some discussions about that lately.

Of the 3 you ask about, I'd use the Carquest Premium. Of course the other PGI variants that others have mentioned are good too. Just don't use glue shedders, lol.

This is not a good assumption.
If a filter has more surface area it may be compensating for more restrictive media.
The net effect could be better, worse, or the same...anyone's guess.
You need actual data to know.

Between the CarQuest Premium and the Pentius PLXL, which would you choose?

From the specification info we have seen, they both look pretty equal, same construction and both claiming efficiency of 99% @ 20u particles and greater. Flip a coin perhaps. Personally, I'd buy the one I could look at and inspect before purchase. I did that with Carquest Premiums ... ordered them on line with a discount code, went to the store (not far away) to pick them up and asked the guy at the counter if I could inspect for any defects (brought a small LED flashlight to look down the center tube). I wouldn't buy a case of filters either, I just don't go through filters that fast. If you don't have an AAP nearby, then ordering the Pentius on-line would be an option if you can return them for free if there happens to be any issues with them (ie, shipping damage or any production flaws). Another option is the MicroGard Select from O'Reilly if you have one close, but the efficiency is a hair less at 99% @ 25u (still pretty good), and it's a solid filter too. Or PGI varients like the STP XL from AutoZone. Can inspect too if bought at a local store. Lots of pretty equal choices.
