i run a repair shop, and lately ive been getting alot of customers that drive vw and audis. now when they come in my specification chart shows they require a certain type of oil 1998-2004. after that 2005-2010 they require a synthetic a certain type though. i carry castrol syntec 5w40 and gc 0w30. would those meet all those standards?

and i do understand the tdi engine require a low saps oil which i have castrol slx prof 5w30 on order.

also when these customers do come in they are enraged that i am telling them there vehicle requires a synthetic. since other shops are putting whatever in there vehicles.

so for example lets say a customer comes in with a 2007 eos. which oil am i supposed to use?(syntec 5w40?) and if the customer wants proof besides a owners manual which many do not have. what can i give them? so they do not think i am trying to just upsell a syn oil.

and which site where i can get information about this low saps oil?

thanks in advance guys just alittle confused and tired of getting yelled at

If you have mitchell on demand or alldata, I think it will show the OE oil requirements/capacities.. maybe you could bring that up on the screen and show them what's required, and that you'll only put what OE requirements are.

I sell to people the mobil 1 0w-40 european formula across the board for the VW/Audi/BMW. benz's have their own formula.
it's easier to sell what it says on the bottle because people have to see things for themselves.
And I know they're getting a quality oil no matter what.

finalyzd, if you google 'vw oil list 504.00' or the appropriate specificiation, you'll find lists of approved lubricants from the VW technical service bulletins. That'll give you a good start on deciding what oils to stock.

If you have Audi owners balking at using the correct synthetic oil, you can always politely ask that they leave your shop - if they're going to whine about a $75 oil change every 10k miles on a $50k car, imagine how tight they'll be when you tell them how much a replacement 1.8T long block will cost to replace their sludged-up & scored one from 5k OCIs on dino Iffy Loob specials!

502 oils and up. Are all synthetic? I printed a list of approved oils. And seems like all the oils available in us are synthetic. No conventional meet no vw standards? And when does this start? 1998 and up? Would newer sn conventionals meet older vw specs?

Since 2000 no conventional oils have been allowed.

For your gas engines, you'll want 502.00 oils. For older diesels, 505.00 or 505.01, depending on model year, and the latest diesels, 507.00.

NOTE: Most Euro oils are gas/diesel, meaning they're 502.00/505.00, or 502.00/505.00/505.01 (505.01 supersedes 505.00).

504.00/507.00 oils while technically meeting 502.00 are not directly spec'd for use in the US yet in gas engines.

I don't think SN would meet Euro specs since they have higher ZDDP levels.

That oil no longer meets the 503.01 high horsepower turbo spec for some Audi's, and I believe VW's W8 engine.

I found this tidbit on 503.01:

"Oils listed in this section meet the VW 503.01 specification. This specification is specifically for Audi RS4, Audi TT, S3 and Audi A8 6.0 V12 models with outputs of more than 180bhp, running with variable service intervals (30,000km or 2 years). Now superceded by the VW 504.00 specification."

"Oils listed in this section meet the new VW 504.00 specification. These oils are suitable for all petrol engines with extended service intervals (30,000km or 2 years).

The VW 504 00 specification supercedes the VW 503 00 and VW 503.01 specifications. VW 504 00 oils are suitable for engines meeting the demands of Euro IV emissions standards."

Print this out and post it somewhere customers can take all the time they need to look it over.

For gas engine Audis and VWs, tell them they can look it up on the audiusa website for themselves.

It is at www.audiusa.com,
-then click the "Owners" link at the bottom left of the screen

-then click "Care and Maintenance" on the menu on the left

-then click "Audi Maintenance Schedules" on the left

-then click the "View Approved Engine Oils for Audi Vehicles" on the right hand side of the screen.

This is the link that will open, showing the approved oils with spec 502 and 504 that can be used for all gas engines in the USA.

http://microsites.audiusa.com/ngw/09/media/downloads/pdfs/Audi_TechnialServiceBulletin_1997-2010.pdf

NOTE: Even though the 504 oils are designated as "long drain" oils in Europe for 30000km (18000 mile oil change intervals), in the USA they should be used for the STANDARD oil change interval listed in the manual. The USA gas does not support the Europe longer oil drain intervals.

All of the approved 502 and 504 spec oils are synthetic.

If you want to keep the VW and Audi owners as customers, then it's best if you know more than they do about the requirements for their cars.

Syntec 5w40 and GC 0w30 meet the VW 502.00/505.00 spec, which applied to 2003-and-earlier VWs. These engines can also accept an API CJ-4 rated oil in the 5w40 viscosity, gas and diesel.

From 2004-2008, most engines used an oil meeting VW 505.01 or 506.01, the latter now being completely phased out I think.

The newest engines use oils meeting VW 504.00/507.00 specs. All VW and Audi engines can use such oils, AFAIK.

If you want to minimize the number of different oils, then maybe stock a 5w30 meeting VW 504.00/507.00 and then either Syntec 5w40 or some other 5w40 like Mobil 1.
