"About 11% of the TX population is legally eligible for concealed carry"

Please explain....I'd like to know more about this. I'm interesting in buying a .38 and obtaining a license.

Our CHL class instructor mentioned that only 11% of Texas residents could qualify, noting that criminal history issues, including child support, outstanding warrants, even some debt problems, judgements, etc affect eligibility.
Of course owning and carrying are 2 diffent issues.

I used to go camping a lot and carried several weapons. When you are out somewhere there is zero chance for help. I received my training in the military and have no problem with the idea of shooting someone that came after a family member. I was a corpsman in Viet Nam and a paramedic after that and I've seen what people do to each other. People can be incredibly cruel if they think they have the advantage and can get away with whatever they might plan to do. A gun can stop their plans and give you options. I think that more permits should be issued to responsible citizens if they request them. If you have never carried a concealed weapon in public you can’t imagine the feeling you have that you must be very careful. To me gun control means hitting what you aim at.

I have 'engaged a target' but it turned out to be a drunk yelling and banging on the wrong door late at night. If the locks hadn't held he'd be dead, so I'm glad that I had beefed up the locks on the doors.

If you want relevant CCW info, there is a good webpage at www.packing.org. Notice that's an "org" and not a "com".

I am a 12 year LEO from Indiana. But I still have a seperate CCW permit. I used to get one from Indiana, but now I have a Florida CCW, because you can actually get one as an out of state resident (at least when I got mine, don't know if that's changed). Indiana will honor ANY permit that your state issues for CCW, but not all states will honor an IN permit. So, there is an added cost, but an added benefit to being able to get a FL permit because for most of you who are not Law Enforcement Officers, you can travel more with the FL permit as it's recognized in more states. Again, I think you can still get a FL permit even as an out of state resident; it just costs more and you still must qualify to their standards.

Since 2005, there has been a Federal law that now allows LEO's to carry concealed nationwide; part of one of the Homeland Security laws passed. I don't have to worry about it now.

This is a personal statement, not a professional one. Your choice to CCW is one of the largest and most challenging decisions to make. Treat it wisely. In most states, it's your right; in others, it's considered a priveledge (unfortunately).

The www.packing.org site is full of info; it's about as up to date as you'll find.

Move to Vermont. No permits needed for open or concealed carry. The sole requirement is that you have no intention of breaching the peace, and the only limitations are no carry on school property and no carry of loaded guns in a car.

" ... and no carry of loaded guns in a car." Kind of defeats the purpose for self-defense if you're setting inside and getting car jacked, doesn't it?

I didn't realize that Vermont was so reasonable overall, though. Isn't your neighboring state to the East even more tolerant? I believe New Hampshire's state motto is "Live free or die"; you just gotta love that. IIRC they have no laws abridging any weapons ownership or use, if I'm not mistaken.

Well, carjacking has yet to become an issue here in VT, and the no loaded guns in cars laws have more to do with hunting regulations (to prohibit road-hunting) than they do public safety.

As for NH gun law, the land of Live Free or Die requires permits for concealed carry (excluding home or place of business).

Just a note to inform that "packing.org" died some weeks ago. There are several other sites of varying interest to CCW holders. Just do a google search.

Been "exercising" my constitutional right for the last 5 years or so. No one knows except me, and if they want to know, they'll know!

Tire of oil forum....
Iam sure there are alot of concealed weapon permit carriers on this "Real man" site. How often does everyone really exercise the right and carry a gun all the time?

I do. But I advise training. We don't have mandatory firearms training in this state but I recommend it and not some simple little gun handling course. Seattle Firearms Academy minimum 3 FAS levels.
"Real man site"? what's this [censored]? I know women who can outshoot me.

Iam sure the policemen on this site do but noone is gonna hassle you, because you can flash a badge and everything is cool.

You notice the lights. Some do, had a couple, I told them it's the law period.

Recently a woman was stabbed to death in a Dennys in Orlando, a waitress, in a tourist part of town( not a bad part) by her Ex husband and no one helped or stopped or even attempted to stop the guy from leaving, hes still at large, this is with a full restruant. Most callers to the radio show said they carry a gun and would have stopped him, but I have to ask myself how many non law enforcement personal really carry a gun.

First, you must be a "good witness" you are not obigated to help civilians. How many people are in the area? Do you have family with you? Has the gunmen directed a grave threat towards you? Do you know how and when to use lethal force? Can you get one on one with the gunmen? Lots to think about in split seconds. As a carrier you protect yourself or your family during a grave threat. Bad guy can run at you full speed average 1.3 seconds 21 feet. Can you react? I can't tell you because everybody with training reacts differently.
Public safety, good training, and one on one is important.

I would have attacked that man with or without a gun, probably a chair would have been my first choice, but I would not have let that man stab that woman to death in front of me without a confrontation.

That's your choice and it could end up successful or bad for you. I would have to be there and above I listed split second decisions. W

(I guess there is a limit) CONT - Likely I would have done something but like I said I would have to be there.

I've had 2 situations in grave danger and both those 2 no shots were fired. Yes I do carry all the time.

Don't mean to be dry but carrying a firearm for protection is a big responsibilty.

Yes I am pro-gun and pro-carry but not pro-mandatory training. You live with your choices and make the wrong choice you'll be dead from a cop because you did'nt holster your gun when he/she got there or by a jury.

My daughter lives in WV and I in Pa. WV, and Va. within the last few months recognized Pa.'s CCW. So when I go down there I can keep a clip and one in the pipe except for the 15 minutes that I'm in the People's Republic of Maryland. Very cool.

THAT IS SO TRUE! I lived in MD for 37 years until having to relocate to Texas due to work. Love it here. MD has become the California of the East Coast. Funny, too - if I drive back to MD to visit I can carry my gun legally all the way across country until MD! Then I'm a criminal. Insane.
