Best pistol for Canadians?

Any pistol that has not been confiscated at the time when Canadians grow their balls back and get tired of a Socialist goverment bleeding them dry with taxes and making life and business impossible with red tape and regulations on everything and use what they got to force changes.

Well the last was helpful commentary... NOT! That I happen to be quite disenchanted with some aspects of my governance, particularly as it relates to personal firearms ownership, I still take great offense to your patronising tone. I don't get on this website and sling feces at your country or it's governance. As far as I'm concerned, if you live (and vote!) in America then you get the right to criticise her. Until you acquire at least a small amount of courtesy, keep yer trap shut about my nation. You don't live here and you obviously misunderstand it from a resident's perspective (in fact, things have been improving in my view lately). The good Lord above knows that she ain't perfect but she's MINE! And before you go off getting all mad in the face, take a moment, breathe and think how you would have felt if I insulted you (testicular fortitude ________) and urged terrorism in your native land... Seriously, whether you meant it or not, you said that.

John.

John,

Who’d a thought this could become cross boarder political discussion? Don't worry about the Canada bashers, they'll be begging to be Canadians once they finally realize we have all the oil and water, and we're actually fighting the real war against terrorism in Afghanistan. G0D Bless the soldiers and families that are losing loved ones over seas, particularly the ones George W. is sacrificing in Iraq.

By the way I like our P.M. too, he is doing a good job.... Not a fabulous job, but pretty good.

Now, back to guns.

George from Para Ordnance said,

“A good model to look at might be the PX189SR. Stainless steel, 5" barrel, and full sized double stack grip. Chambered in 9mm. It is a tack diver, and comes with fully adjustable competition target sights. Retail on that is somewhere around $1200.00 Canadian Dollars, depending on what the dealer wants to charge for it.”

Sounds good to me. Anybody else have an opinion about this beauty?

Anything from Para is the finest quality and reliable as all get out. They aren't cheap implements but you are getting your money's worth. I would opt for a more ergonomic single-stack .45 as opposed to a high-capacity grip that is neutered by ridiculous magazine restrictions. A single-column eight-round magazine that is gripped well by most hands versus a ten-round magazine that is a compromise towards capacity. It is a compromise that I might be tempted to make without the capacity restriction that we must tolerate, but seeing as it is currently a minority government, I cannot see the rules shifting as of yet.

Now I see that you were specifying a 9mm chambering. Given that decision, there is absolutely no choice whatsover. Get a single-column magazine and you would be pushing ten-rounds as is. Not exactly certain what a 9mm 1911 carries in a standard grip frame but I wouldn't get a double-column frame for one here.

If you are considering IPSC or something like that, the only benefit to having a double-column magazine is their inherintly better indexing when re-loading due to their shape. And I believe that "Major 9" loading is still forbidden so that would argue against the calibre choice. So most would be better off with a standard grip frame in most any calibre here in Canada. What about a customised Hi-Power? A slicked up Hi-Power is one of the finest arms ever produced in many people's opinions. Mine included.

John.

My only para-ord was waaay back when they only built frames for custom builders. My custom builder wasn't that great, but what I've seen since (factory built) seem like really nice examples for mass production.

Maybe I went a little too far but this is the TRUTH, I live just across the river from Canada, I met some Canadians gun owners at a range over here and became friends. I stored types of guns that they said "our government said we can't have any more"(picture: little boy being scolded by wise parent) until they could find more permanent storage here. I'll tell you where the limit is for me and alot of others is when the government says I have to turn in or destroy or can't pass on a gun I have legally owned in the past and now they say I cannot own it any more, that's where I draw the line.

Difficult not to sound patronising with this but, thanks a lot of the attitude change. I appreciate that. You are quite correct that the current situation is not acceptable here. The problem is that too many of the uninitiated feel that it IS. Majority rules. Perhaps if the majority vote appropriately in the next federal election things may change direction somewhat. As it stands with a minority government, hot-topics such as liberalising ridiculously onerous firearms laws will only feed into the anti's fears & serve to mobilise the BLANK-holes. A majority government is required for that to be started. And started slowly so as not to raise an 'alarm'...

Growth or lack of testicular equipment has little to do with the fact that USA's founding fathers had the wisdom and forthought to protect our most basic, bloody venue to control or change our government should it grow too out of control. 2nd ammendment has nothing to do with hunting or self defense. It's our LAST RESORT protecting all the other rights guaranteed by the most magnificient document in world history.

most humbly,

Bob Reed

As a choice for a accurate, dependable handgun what could be better than the ruler of bullseye, practical, pin shooting and every other handgun discipline? the 1911 Colt or any of it's literally thousands of clones (some much better, some much worse than the Colt brand). Out of the box they'll outshoot just about anything. Tuned and accurized they will OUTSHOOT ANYTHING!

Another vote for the 9mm Browning hi-power Belgium-made. I'm thinking about getting one myself, as the local gun shop/shooting range has one new for $600 USD. I'm in the same boat as you, and will only be using for target practice shooting with the kids. Wife doesn't want guns in the house but she made a compromise and I can keep them if I lock them up and have no ammo in the house. 9mm ammo is a little cheaper than 40 or 45 caliber and that's why I'm going to get the 9mm.

Sig P210 if you want an awsome out of the box gun! THe Sphinx is also great right out of the box. THe price is too high then try an EAA Witness model but in a factory competition model! Personely I am not a fan of the 9mm for a number of reasons put I also do not dislike it or hate it!

If you want to do bulleye shooting with a 22 I recomend a Browning BuckMark BullsEye model!! Theyir varmint model is also really good right out of the box!

Finally bought a pistol!

For this Canadian south paw the answer was the ambidextrous, 9mm, CZ-85 Combat, with three extra mags to go with the two the gun came with.

I wanted a Canadian made Para-Ordnace 1911 Tactical Duty SSP, but simply cannot afford it, or the .45 ACP it digests.

I'll let you know how it shoots next week, after I take it to the range.
