Coffee - what are you using and why?

I just bought a 2 lb. bag of Tim Horton's whole beans at Sam's club with the usual coarse grind for my French Press.

Very smooth and flavorful.

I just had a cup of my favorite coffee: Starbucks Caffe Verona Bold. I can now buy a 2 lb bag of whole beans at Costco for the same price as a 1 lb bag at Starbucks.

(I'd prefer to keep this to coffees that are widely available in stores.... so if you suggest it, I can easily go buy some).

Right now, I am using Eight O'Clock's 100% Colombian.

I'm drinking it because it is a Colombian variety with a good, solid taste.... with nothing unexpected.

I tried it because of a favorable Consumer Reports rating.

At $4 for an 12 ounce bag, it is only slightly more expensive than brands such as Folgers or Maxwell House, but is much better.

We use Maxwell House, it's cheap and we like it.

We mix MH Rich Dark 33.3% and MH Original 66.6%. The water is 1/2 tap and 1/2 bottled.

We just got 10 cans of MH on sale 2.2 lbs for $4.97.. that should last a while.

From what I saw, 7-11 uses Farmer's brother and so does McDonald's. I remember our workplace used to use FB and they are IMO even better than Starbucks.

Also 7-11 is about a quick as it gets to grab a coffee. At the office we use Maxwell House Master Blend, 3 scoops to a drip brewed pot, and that seems to work quite nicely.

Had some community new orleans blend the other day and was very impressed. I haven't been fond of chicory infused coffee in the past, but this stuff is smooth and mellow like you wouldn't believe.

Hmm, I may ask some friends with Sam's memberships to pick me up some of that. I love Tim Horton's coffee. It's available locally in half-kilo and kilogram cans, pre-ground.

My current favorite is Don Pablo "Signature Blend" whole bean from Costco, really good.

Almost finished with my stash of gift coffees received last Christmas. The pound of Dunkin Donuts beans from my daughter is gone now, and there is about one or two grinder loads of the Bucamaranga beans from my sisters, both were quite enjoyable.

Costco's house brand, Kirkland, has 3-pound bags of whole beans from different regions around the world, Columbian, Guatemalan, Sumatran, Kona, etc. I was going to work my way through trying these out, but I'm a little gun shy after the bag of Guatemalan beans I tried had a distinctly burnt flavor to them. I see where some other folks here have had good experiences with these, so maybe I was just unlucky enough to happen upon a bad batch. I'd really like it if they'd put together some sort of sampler pack that had a quarter pound or so of each of them. Three pounds is an awful lot of something you haven't tried before.

Just bought a 2.5lb bag of Mayorga's Farmers' Friendly Coffee medium roast from Sam's Club.

Coarse ground and French pressed for 5 minutes produced a smooth, chocolatey, and earthy brew.

Hard-core roast & grind your own purists need read no further- just pre-ground canned store coffee here.

I have a new one to me- house brand(Brookshire's chain, Food Club brand) 100% Columbian. It was on sale for $2.50/can- real steel cans too, a big plus IMO. I got a can & tried it out, & went back on the last sale day & bought 5 more cans. Taste is *Very* close to Yuban, with a slightly salty overtone. I may try switching from store-bought jugged spring water to distilled water as an experiment.

So don't be afraid to try out your store's house brand coffee, especially if it says 100% Columbian on the can or bag.

Just was out at Wal-Mart picking up candy.... you know, if it sits around the house too long.... it strangely disappears...

They had a shopping cart filled with bags of Dunkin' Donuts coffee... regularly $7.87, clearance for $3.00.

It's all in date, dated September 2011.

Brewing a half pot right now... I can't wait to see if all of the comments about this coffee are correct.

Had the same experience with the Guatamalan bean from Costco, So over roasted it was undrinkable. They were quite happy to refund my purchasel. I want to try their Columbian sometime, I tend to like first quality Columbians.

Interesting thread. My favorite coffee is the French roast from Peerless in Oakland. I get big foodservice bags of it so it's not very expensive. It has a wonderful, smooth, rich flavor--and it's not burnt like so many West Coast dark roasts are.

I'm surprised at how many single cup coffeemaker users there are. That wouldn't work in my household. For one-cup servings, I use an Aeropress:

It works well. I like that, unlike a French press, it uses a paper filter. The cholesterol in coffee strongly adsorbs to paper filters.

I honestly would've bought the entire cart...

Johnny,

What is the current price range on Dunkin's coffee in your locale?

It's running $8.99 per pound here at WKRP.

Not sure if this has been posted, but expect coffee prices to start going up; it is becoming prevalent in non Western countries and also speculators have jumped into the market.....

Funny. My brother brought a pound to my parent's house and I was blown away by the quality.
