A few days ago, TooSlick made mention of Mobil 1 0w40's performance in the old Sequence IIIE test as documented in the SAE paper "Advanced Synthetic Passneger Vehicle Engine Oils for Extnded Oil Drain Performance" (SAE paper 981444). As it turns out, Mobil 1 0w40 did quite well. Sequence IIIE requires an oil to thicken no more that 375% after 64 hours. Mobil 1 0w40 thickened only 17% after 256 hours.

And that graph shows very well that the oil shears then thickens. Which seems to defeat the purpose of a 40wt, other than to stay below the maximum thickening longer. Definately not gonna go with that if i wanted the 40wt to stay thick.

ferb!

Isn't it SCARY that the old SJ allowed the oil to thicken by 375% and still "pass" the test.

I doubt an oil that thickened 375% would even pour out when you took off the drain plug. You'd need a hammer and chisle to get it out.

The European ACEA, depending on specs, capped the thickening at 25-50%. Most of the ACEA sequence tests are run at the extended +200 hours.

The current SL is allowed to thicken 275% and "pass" the test.

This allows a 75 cent a quart Brand X to earn the API "Starburst" and be considered "just as good" as a $6 a quart synthetic.

I thought the perceived problem of the 0-40 was "thinning" not thickening with use. We already know synth's have excellent oxidation resistance vs. conv. oils.

Mobil 1 0w40 thins somewhat initially, and then remains fairly viscosity stable for the remainder of its service life. Oddly, this is exactly what we are seeing Amsoil 5w30 do in 3MP's study—so far.

Any similar info on Delvac 1/M1 5W-40?

Haven't seen too many UOAs on D1, but in one turbo SAAB UOA it sheared some (to 13.9 cSt), just like M1 0W-40.

Probably not a big deal?

Gonna try Delvac 1 in my SAAB turbo this summer...
