I just ran 2 11k OCI's with M1 Ext Performance through a 2001 Mazda Protoge and noticed that the lifters/cam/head was much cleaner than before. I had been using M1 10-30 from 40k until the new extended performance came along car now has 115k. There used to be a brownish varnish look to all the parts inside and now they look as clean as new (no varnish) Is there really that much detergent in M1 extended performance? I'm quite surprised considering I thought ordinary M1 was a very clean oil.

Not so far fetched. I've seen a similar process taking place, but with GC not M1EP. Earlier this year, my mother-in-law gave her little used, mostly garaged 1987 Cadillac Seville (only 55k miles on the odo, really!) to my 16 year old son. The engine (4.1L V-8) had a pretty good, deeply colored varnish coat (but essentially no sludge, at least not on top of the head). We've put only a couple thousand miles on it with GC, and it is obviously loosing some of the varnish.

I didn't think it would remove varnish either. I thought the detergents only prevented it, not remove it. But I am happy with what it is doing though.

I would only add a caution about over-generalizing. In a car with a badly baked on case of varnish with sludge, forget it, hoping for a cure from an oil is hopeless. But in lesser cases, the oil's additive package may be able to help. The Caddy I described above is definitely in the latter category.
