Wouldn't hurt and would be some extra insurance against it. Any quality synthetic changed within a reasonable time frame however should be fine.

I am concerned though because my new (to me) jeep was a lease, and so many people don't take care of lease vehicles. This is what I did when I got it:

Changed oil to Quakerstate Q ran it for 1000 miles, came out pretty dark (not black)

Changed oil to mobil 1 synthetic ran it for 1000 miles, came out pretty clean.

Changed oil to amsoil, this was 2000 miles ago, and ever since I did this, the first start up with amsoil and ever "cold" start there after has been rougher than it use to be. After everything is warmed up, idle is nice and smooth. The air filter and pvc valve have been replaced, and the throttle body was removed and throughly cleaned, but nothing helped...

I am very concerned...

EDIT: This vehicle only has 37,800 miles on it.

CMB,

I can understand your concern because it's a leased auto. For sure it's well broken in so you don't have to worry about that issue.

Reardless of what brand of synthetic oil you use your safe as long as it's a synthetic. For myself I can't use Amsoil cuz of the price although I was offered by e-mail to be able it get it for a good price. I like my M1 and will use it until I can afford a salary.

Assuming the engines runs well I'd go a full 3000K before you consider changing/considering to try anything else. If the "Q" works well for you then I'd stay with it. Again I'd rather change my oil based on the manuals recommendations instead of trying to go for such a long distance dispite the usage of synthetic oil.

Their is not any engine ever built that is sludge proof! So no matter how many people say they have an issue with sludge I seldom blame the engine. In almost all cases baring head gasket leaks and such it is almost always the owners fault. Failure to keep the engine in proper operateing condition wich includes all the sub systems that make up the engine espcialy PCV,oil changes, filtration etc...... Now in case's were the problem is so wide spread that the OEM has had to issue a TSB or Recall for gelling or engine failure relateing to type of oil used etc... then I take it seriously as a design issue. Infact as a former Mechanic I can tell you I seldom say an engine in the shop that did not have some deposit issues except for the short time I owned my own export tunner shop those engines were so clean I would be willing to eat a cookie off of one!

Well changing oil every 3-5K with amsoil is stupid, it costs way too much to do that. Aside from that, I just checked my level yesterday and the oil is still golden after 2900 miles. If ya'll are saying I should change it every 3k to avoid sludge issues, I will just switch back to "generic" synthetic.

Anyone have any input on amsoil diesel 5w30 to help fight against sludge and still be able to give me 10k oil changes?? (with a filter every 5k)

CMB,

Forgive me but I had no idea that you were talking about diesel engines!!! I thought it was plain old gasoline.

In either case if you believe your engine will go the distance then go for it. Just try to get the largest oil filter you can and see what happens. For the oil to still be clean and gloden color I'd might not consider changing it either. Still for my 4.7 I'm an ole [censored] and prefer to do mine every 3K.

Amsoil S3K 5W30 is an excellent oil and I have often recomended it in the past. You can easily run it for 12 month interval with just filter changes and top up! The key is starting with a clean engine. So seeing how the engine was a lease turn in I think you would be wise to run an Auto-Rx clean and rinse with conventional oil as per the instructions! THis will ensure you start with a clean engine. A lot of people ont his site run 10,000+ mile or 12 month oil change intervals! Amsoil has a great track record inmost applications even doing extended drains. Usualy when their is an issue it is due to filtration of the air or lack their of!!!

So to recap Amsoil Series 3000 5W30 HD is great for this engine and feel free to run out the oil change interval much longer then some are telling you!

Durango - It is not a diesel engine it is gas. He is asking about using the diesel 5w30 because it has stronger detergents.

CMB - dude. Relax a little. This isn't that big of a deal. I am not trying to be a jerk but are you ever going to pick an oil and just do it? You are worrying needlessly.

Pick an oil and go with it. There is not enough difference in them to make that big of a difference in your engine. Any synthetic will combat sludge better than a conventional oil. If you change the oil regularly you will be fine regardless of the type and brand of oil you use.

For synthetics Amsoil, Royal Purple, Mobil 1, Red Line, Quaker State, Valvoline, Castrol, Pennzoil, etc... all offer excellent oils. Pick one and just keep an eye on it. I wouldn't go 15K+ myself on an engine prone to sludge but you certainly are fine up to 10K with a good quality synthetic like Amsoil, RP, PP, etc... If it makes you nervous use something a bit cheaper( PP is pretty cheap )and change it at 5K-7500.

If you are uncomfortable with the cost of changing a synthetic at 5K-7500 then pick a quality conventional oil and do it every 3K.

You can keep asking the same thing 30 different ways but the answers are still going to be the same. Again, I mean absolutely NO offense by this. I am just trying to get you to chill a bit. You need to make a decision and get on with your life though. This is not that big of a deal

Just curious is this your 1st vehicle?

Just curious is this your 1st vehicle?

No, this is not my first vehicle, it is my seventh! This is however my first Chrysler, as well as my first used vehicle. It is also the first vehicle that I have ever owned that has major sludge issues! (documented all over the net) I am "chilled" but no one has answered the question. Amsoil is expensive, I don't have money to throw away changing expensive synthetic every 5k, which a lot of people are telling me to do. Since this is my first used vehicle, I don't know how it was previously cared for, so I want to take every precaution possible to not have a motor blown out from sludge. My question was, will amsoils diesel 5w30 be a better choice for a motor that I don't know the history of? Will it help fight off sludge on extended drain intervals better than the regular gas synthetic? Will it clean any existing sludge better than the gasoline synthetic? I don't think these questions are too unreasonable, and it people here don't know the answers, thats ok. Just say so, don't leave me hanging....

Sorry if I seemed upset, because that is really not the case, trust me. I am a member of many forums, so I know that when you don't know someone, there comments can be taken in different ways...

CMB,

I couldn't tell you if the deisel version will work in a gas engine without any ill effects.

Again what I'd do is flush out well the engine and replace it with the oil of choice and see what happens. Since you really want to OCI at the 10K mark you might consider flushing the engine annually to be sure no sludging occurs.

In addition get the biggest oil filter that will fit on the engine to help increase it's filtering over that large amount of mileage.

In this day n' age of energy conservation no doughbt auto makers will have this OCI as a standard.

No problem. Glad you understood how I meant it as well and not how it sounded.

I thought I had answered your questions, all of them actually. I certainly tried but it seemed like you were going over the same stuff again and again and making it more complicated for yourself than it needed to be. All I was trying to say. I really don't think you need to go with a diesel oil. You can as I said without harm but no need of it IMO.

Let's try this. Taking into account your justified fears with a sludge prone engine, the fact you are concerned about the costs involved, and yet still want a good product here is what I recommend for you.

Go to Wal-Mart( or wherever you can find it cheap )and buy yourself some 5w30 Pennzoil Platinum synthetic oil. You can get it at Walmart cheap and it is an excellent oil. Then go to a local parts store that sells Wix filters and get a 51085 filter( or run to a Napa and get a Napa Gold filter which will be the exact same thing just painted different ). If you want to run the larger filter it is Wix # 51515 but remember this will mean a little extra oil will be needed when you do the change. The filter should not set you back more than approx $5-$7. This will be an excellent combo for your 4.7L.

I would say go with 5K-7500 change intervals( I personally do 5K OC's with synthetic in my vehicles ). If you are going to run 3K than don't waste your money on full synthetic. Either go with a premium conventional or a blend. Just a complete waste of your money doing 3K with synthetic. 5K is really kind of a waste as well but my vehicles are always under warranty( I sell before they are out )so 5K-7500 is the max I can go anwyay. if you ran PP, with a Wix filter, and did it every 5K it would keep your engine healthy and you should be fine. Even stretching it to 7500 should be fine.

I forget how many miles you have on the vehicle now. I know you said the oil you have changed has come out looking good but if you are at all concerned about any internal build up or sludge than flush the engine with some conventional oil and cheap( ie; affordable not cheap quality like Fram )filters first. Auto RX is popular here. I haven't used it myself so can't comment. I use Seafoam per the mfg's instructions and find it works really well.

Hope this answers your questions better.

Yup, it sure does!

Now, I can get maxlife full synthetic for a good price at my local walmart. (slightly less than PP) Would this be more effective at possibly removing the sludge already built up in the motor (if any) and keeping sludge from forming, or should I just plan on PP and not worry?

Oh, by the way, since I have amsoil in the motor now, I am going to do a amsoil engine flush when its time to change again.

I appreciate the help,
Chris

Amsoil S3K 5W30 HD oil is fine and no you do not need to change it every 5000 miles that is silly talk! You can easily do 12 month or 25,000 mile interval with this engine oil combo. Just change the regular oil filter every 5K and top up or use Amsoils oil filter! No big deal!
